Many parents struggle with deciding on the best education for their teen, especially if the child is having a difficult time and getting into excessive trouble. There are many options when it comes to helping these teens, and one good option might be a non-profit boarding school that specializes in helping troubled teens. Organizations and schools similar to The Youth Foundation focus on helping at risk youth and their families. Many of these non-profit boarding schools provide a comprehensive list of programs and therapies including counseling, academics, athletics, mentoring, and individual coaching. However, there are certain things that parents need to consider when looking at non-profit boarding schools in comparison to other options for troubled teens.

Cost

Parents of at risk or troubled youth know the benefits of a boarding school education. Boarding schools are known for their rigorous academic standards, competitive athletics, and strict rules and regulations. The administrators and teachers at boarding schools provide students with 24 hour supervision and direction. As such, boarding school is an ideal place for troubled teens. However, for profit boarding schools are often too expensive for the average American family. The cost of for profit boarding schools can be upwards of $45,000 each year. In comparison, a nonprofit boarding school is decidedly more affordable. Nonprofit boarding schools can cost as much as 30 percent less than for profit boarding schools. Nonprofit boarding schools are funded by public grants, donations, and corporate sponsors. Tuition rates for nonprofit boarding schools are thousands of dollars less than their for profit counterparts.

Education

Even though nonprofit boarding schools cost less than other options, parents and students can rest assured that the education provided at a nonprofit school is on par with the schools with higher tuition rates. Nonprofit boarding schools hire top notch faculty to provide students with a comprehensive, detailed education that will serve them throughout their lives.

Therapy

Nonprofit boarding schools are dedicated to serving at risk youth and their families. They offer students with the treatment programs that they need in order to overcome their difficulties and grow as people and as students. The therapy and counseling programs offered by nonprofit boarding schools are second to none. Without the demands of a board of directors hanging over their heads, the administrators of a nonprofit boarding school can focus on serving students, rather than raising profits. Students who attend boarding school have the opportunity to work with licensed behavioral therapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists. They receive one on one mentoring and academic coaching.

Structure

From infancy through to adulthood, most people thrive on structure. In some families, parents struggle to provide their children with the structure and discipline that they need in order to succeed. A nonprofit boarding school is a great place for parents who need help to provide their students with structure, rules, and discipline. Students who live on campus at a nonprofit boarding school are afforded near constant supervision. Their teachers and other staff members work to ensure that they are safe, comfortable, and abiding by the rules of the school.
