If you are not happy with your life right now, it’s because you have conformed. Conformity is when you align your attitudes, beliefs and behaviors with those around you. Trying to fit in may be killing you - and your dreams. By spending all your time trying to fit in and please people, it's keeping you from making any real money. It’s got you stuck in front of a TV every night being programmed to buy certain things and wear your clothes a certain way. ">Earl Nightengale says that by the time we’re 65, if we haven’t learned to become financially independent in the richest country in the world, it’s because we’ve become stuck in conformity.

The Conformity Test

Do you agree with any of these statements? 1. My life is influenced by outside forces 2. I think other people have kept me from living my dreams 3. I believe there is no way out of the situatio I’m in If you answered yes to any of these, it's time to reassess. Recently, my husband and I went to go see the movie musical, Les Miserables. Like the title suggests, the film is about the miserable, sad, and desperate lives of the huge class of poor people in France during a time when most of the wealth was held by the elite. Writer Victor Hugo’s story was first published in 1862, and here we were in a theatre, munching popco and watching movie stars act out the horrible and pathetic lives of people who struggled to survive. The theatre was packed. Tears were shed. And then we all got back in our comfy cars and drove home. The story represents the very real economic and social conditions of the times. The country’s middle class had been ruined by the wealthy few and they were ready to revolt. Sound familiar? Four-star Navy Admiral ">Hyman Rickover, writing in his article The Decline of the Individual, wrote about the poisonous effect of conformity in the work world.

“Nevertheless the individual who must work in a large organization, whether private or public, meets conditions of inequality not found elsewhere in our democratic society. Nor is this inequality necessarily a result of unequal human qualities; it comes because one party has behind him the power of the organization and uses it to prevail over the other. This reminds one uncomfortably of the special rights and privileges which once were enjoyed by men for no other reason than membership in a higher estate—as when society was divided into the nobility, the clergy and the third estate."

Let me translate for those of you whose eyes glazed over. (Yeah, I know you’re out there…) If you work in an office or a factory, you are not in charge. You’re not equal to your boss, and you’ll be reminded of it every day.

Why do you work?

Ask yourself this: Why do you work? Why do you get up in the morning and drive off to work? Because you didn’t know you had a choice? The WHY is very important. It's your reason to revolt against the conformity you’ve accepted. This is not a revolt against an oppressor, or a bad guy or anybody else. That’s blaming – and once you start blaming someone else, you’ve given up your power all over again. Your life should be an adventure. Stop putting up with the BS going on around you. Dig out your dreams. And make them your goal. Write on a card what it is you want more than anything else in life. Write it down specifically. One goal. Don’t show it to anyone. ">Earl Nightengale says the moment you decide on a goal, you are among the most successful people on the planet. Don’t worry about how it’s going to happen. Just know where you’re going.

Compete vs. Create

Instead of competing all we have to do is create, Nightingale said in 1950. People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going. When you get in an airplane, you can be pretty darn sure that you’ll get to the place you were going because you bought the ticket, and the crew knew where they were going. Stop conforming. Give it up now. If you think in negative terms you’ll get negative results. Believe and succeed. *** Make the decision to be a non conformist, and joi Gracie's blogging team, where you can hang out with other non conformists who are living their dreams.
