The first part talks about his experiences as a trainee officer, being the first ones to be deployed to Vietnam and initial sentiments about the Vietnam War. The following section pertains to him being assigned to carry out a desk job where he must keep count and maintain records for his deceased comrades and the attitude of the senior officers towards the conflict at hand. The last section relates to his reassignment as the leader of a rifle company and how he was almost court-marshaled because of his subordinates.
