Everyone should have social media privacy whether they are man, woman, or child. Social privacy on the internet is one of the biggest things that anyone can have in this day and age. This is because there are so many people trying to take it away from a user at every step on the social media systems. If Big Brother ever existed or exists, then it is on the social media systems.
There is a story of a person who asked for the file that the social media system was keeping about them. The social system complied and sent the file to the gentleman in the form of paper. The gentleman received the file and opened it. He was surprised with how much information he received because the information was over 1000 pages long. This is just an illustration of how much information the social networks are collecting about their users. There is no telling what the social networks do with the information.
What we do know about the social media systems and their use of the information is that they use the information to help other businesses make money. The businesses use this information to target specific target markets within the data. However, most people are unaware that the social media systems are doing this and collecting the information from the users. Therefore, this makes this a shady business practice (because any business practice that must be hidden inside the fine print is a business practice that must be questioned).
The counter to this activity is to develop a strategy to maintain their privacy on the social networks. A person must carefully decide what they will say and how they say it because it will be tracked by the social networks. Not only will this information get tracked, it will also be used as marketing data for businesses to use as targeting data. There may be more uses for this information that the social networking systems do not tell their users about, however, there is no way of telling. The best thing for a user to do is manage what they say online and choosing wisely what they will say and what they will not say on the social networks.
In closing, a person (man, woman, or child) that manages their social networking profile effectively will have more privacy than their friends and family who do not manage their privacy well. The social networking systems are in the business of selling information to businesses for targeting purposes. Therefore, it is smart for the users of the systems to control and limit what types of information and what information is released on the social networking systems. People who manage these posts and updates will be tempted to buy far less than their counterparts who post whatever they feel like on the internet with no thought about what they are sharing. Therefore, a smart user of the social networking systems makes a plan well in advance of needing it and follows that plan to the T.
