From Salwar kameez to bell-bottoms to fusion wear, Indian fashion has undergone a major transformation through the decades. Fashion reflects the social and political scenario of any country. If we talk about India, it is a developing nation which is fast pacing up with developed nations while keeping its roots embedded in its ancient culture and traditions. The latest example of the same is the burgeoning growth of fusion wears in the Indian fashion industry. Fusion wear defines the amalgamation of Indian and western wear that outlines the beauty of both worlds. The emergence of fusion wear is revolutionising the industry to such an extent that many top-notch fashion brands are bringing this element in their latest collections. From street fashion to ramp and from real life to reel life, fusion wear is fast becoming a wardrobe essential. As said earlier, fusion wear blends the western and Indian culture so beautifully that it is comfortable, smart and a perfect clothing to meet the modern demands of Indian generation. Examples of fusion wear for women can be wearing a spaghetti top with a Kashmiri stole and a skirt containing Rajasthani print. From the long and short sleeves of traditional salwar kameez going Indo-western, means to forego the sleeves altogether or replacing them with spaghetti straps is ‘fusion’. Poncho style kurtis or one-sleeve designs are also the part of contemporary western fashion trends. In Indo-western fashion, kurtas and salwars are shorter than the traditional ones. Other examples of indo-western clothing can be wearing jeans with salwar, kurta or a choli, adding duppatta to a western style outfit or wearing a lehenga with a halter-top, plazzos, capes, etc. The latest fusion wear for women includes draping a saree with an off-shoulder blouse, pairing a flared palazzo or dhoti pants with a crop top, wearing a lehenga with a jacket style kurti and wearing a kurti as a whole dress in itself. For men, fusion wear can be wearing traditional kurta with sports shoes and scarves, wearing a coat over kurta to give a cool and urbane look or pairing jalsa jutis with casual kurta and jeans. Similar to men and women, there are several options one can find in Kids’ fusion wear as well. Indo-western wear, especially among women buyers is getting popular day by day due to the rising number of working women and the increasing acceptance of changing social norms by everyone. Apart from looking good, women want comfortable clothing and fusion wear is the perfect match for such a preference. Nowadays, many designers are creating western outfits such as long gowns and smart tops with kamalkari, bagru and ikkar prints on them. Not only for designers, it is comfortable for a person also to come out of the shackles of same clothing norms and try something new. Today, women choose traditional prints and get them stitched in a western outfit. Those, who are hesitant about trying complete western wear, fusion wear is the best option to remain attached to their base while trying something new. Though we are witnessing a high growth in the fusion wear market in India, we still have a long way to go, considering the market potential of the country. Today, we have brands offering a mix of both but we are yet to see a fashion brand with the complete portfolio of fusion wear.
