Hydroponic systems grow flowers, herbs or vegetables but lack the use of soil. The plants get the nutrients they demand from bought nutrients placed in water creating a growing solution that is uptaken at the roots. As soil is not used as a buffer the water used in the method becomes vital. The kinds of tap water existing differs throughout the UK from hard to soft, and because of this the type of water employed in the system needs to be standardized. In a nutshell water filtration removes all the minerals in water to make a neutral base to which to apply your nutrients. By utilizing filtrated water you are more likely to get maximum results from your nutrient solution and obtain maximum growth in your crops.
All tap water has minerals within it these are amassed by the water dripping through numerous rocks and soil groups as it travels. The levels of these minerals are measured in ppm (parts per million) and purified to a harmless level by water companies. Yet drinking water in the UK differs based on the area you live in, with mineral content of many waters varying from 150-420 ppm. This can be a problem when introducing nutrients to solution in hydroponics. Most nutrients state on the directions to make up a solution (based upon on the quantity of plants) to a certain ppm for example 1500 ppm. Therefore if the water you are working with already has a content of 200 ppm it can be difficult to resolve this with your nutrient level. The water has a mineral content of 200 ppm however for a lay person it is hard to know what amounts of minerals are within it, and this is where water filtration devices come into their own.
Reverse osmosis water purification systems filter out the minerals in the water returning the complete water product to 0 ppm. This is achieved by getting rid of large molecules such as calcium and magnesium by forcing the water via a membrane layer. Different filters work with different water forms and the types of water in your region can be found on local water companies or environment agency websites , or by buying a water testing set from your local hydroponic trader or online. Many gardeners and hydroponic gardeners utilize these filters, as they understand from experience that by filtering the water used in the process gain optimum benefits from the nutrients in solution, and produce the most effective conditions and greater growth in the plants.
