Many people and business's shy clear of technology because they either fear it or they don't understand it, often both. Non-profits are no different in that respect, but they are different in that they often lack the discipline of a market that eventually forces them to tackle the issue. Technology has changed the way the world works significantly in the last ten years, and its fairly certain that it evolve even more quickly over the next ten.If a non-profit doesn't really get technology or understand the internet, then it wont have the freedom to decide for itself, what benefits if any, technology and the internet can bring to its work. There's also often a fear of being lost in technology.
That just because a machine or a computer can do some thing , it means that you should ,sadly often this has been the approach too often to the use of technology and is really destructive , because essentially you are giving up control of your decision making rationales to anything mechanical.this goes to the heart of why non profits need to understand technology and the internet. Any non-profit starts off with a vision or a view of its mission as to what it wants to achieve. It the looks for funding either through grants, fundraising etc. it will sue people either employees or volunteers to carryout that work as effectively as possible.
The internet and social media have potential benefits in all these areas, but could also be time consuming and not needed for some non profits. A non profit needs to understand the internet and the different forms of social media, simply in order to understand how they can be used in different areas. Once they have that understanding, then they are in a position to make an informed judgment as to whether their own organization could benefit from their use or not.
Without that understanding , non profits don't really have the knowledge to make such a choice.
It is worth remembering that the term non profit or charity can be applied and often is to many organizations of differing sizes and operational differences. This really means that they can have very different needs and obligations, like human beings, and each non profit or charity has its own specific
approach to what it needs to do.

Myth #1: Drug addiction is voluntary behavior. A person starts out as an occasional drug user, and that is a voluntary decision. But as times passes, something happens, and that person goes from being a voluntary drug user to being a compulsive drug user. Why? Because over time, continued use of addictive drugs changes your brain -- at times in dramatic, toxic ways, at others in more subtle ways, but virtually always in ways that result in compulsive and even uncontrollable drug use. Myth #2: More than anything else, drug addiction is a character flaw.
