Why Traffic Is Good For Your Business, and How to Get More of It

Most people do not understand statistics in any kind of detail, but if there is one statistic that every business owner out there does understand, it is that the more people there are that know about your business, you are more likely to have a profitable concern.
It is a simple numbers game really. If you consistently get 5% business from your advertising efforts, then having your message reach one thousand people, instead of one hundred, will result in more business.
The trouble most people have is that while they understand that reaching more people with their marketing and advertising methods is important, they do not have the budget necessary to generate more traffic, either to their brick and mortar business, or their website.
The good news is that there are simple ways to generate more traffic to your business without spending a fortune. Here are a few ideas.
Whether your business operates online or off, or a combination of both, something as simple as branding your car can help to generate traffic to your business. When you are parked, or waiting at a traffic light, there is very little people behind and next to you have to do but look at your car. If they happen to read about your business there, they may just become interested, and visit your site, or your business.
Another great, low cost way to generate traffic to your business or website is to include an email signature with every email you send. Use a short, intriguing message, and include a link to your website. If you are sending hundreds of emails every day, then this is a great way to generate traffic for your business without going to any extra effort.
Press releases are another great way of generating traffic without spending a fortune. If your business or website has done something newsworthy, then you can use a press release to get some free print or online advertising. You may even find that there is a snowball effect, as news agencies watch press release sites, and they might just pass your story on if it is interesting enough. That can generate masses of traffic for your site or business at very little cost.
Other great ideas are flyers or posters that include your website and company information, or coupons or competitions that encourage people to visit your site or business. Appearing on a local radio station (many have inserts about local businesses), is another great idea, or you could use social networking to generate traffic to your business or website.
Another tactic that is growing in popularity is viral marketing. Companies use platforms like YouTube, and create interesting or funny videos that they include their business details on. When people see them, and share them with their friends, you instantly gain more exposure, and more traffic to your business.
From link building to joining and participating in forums, there are virtually endless ways to generate more traffic for your website or business, which do not cost a fortune, and are easy to accomplish.
Even simple methods of traffic generation, like attending local business networking events, and supplying all the attendees with your business card, can result in increased traffic. I like to make sure that when I attend those events, I give everyone I meet two business cards – one for them to keep, and one for them to pass on to a friend or colleague. That way, you get twice the result for the same amount of effort!
For the small business owner, this combination of low cost and high potential returns is an attractive proposition. For the cost of a few hours, spent crafting a press release, or a few minutes creating an email signature, the small business owner or entrepreneur can reach thousands of people around the world. When you compare that with the high cost, and low relative readership of print media, there is simply no question as to what is a more desirable form of traffic generation.
The first thing you need to do when you embark on a traffic generation drive is to decide what the desired outcome is. Do you just want more foot traffic in your retail store? Do you want more visitors to your site, or do you want people to make a purchase, or sign up for your newsletter? The desired outcome of your traffic generation efforts may impact on the methods you use when designing your plan.
Of course, traffic generation is an ongoing, long-term process, and it is something that you want to automate as much as possible. Done correctly, however, it can have a huge impact on your business’s profile, and on your sales, so it is a good idea to take a closer look at traffic generation methods, and how they can help you.
