Online shopping is so convenient today. Almost every retailer has a site where you can purchase your items online. Retailers also allow you to purchase your items through your smartphone or tablet too. Some retailers will allow you to search online while you are in the store in case what you want is not on the store shelves. You can purchase something online and pick up in the store. All these options are great and convenient, but did you know online shopping offers pitfalls that you should avoid? Here are reasons why you don’t want to do online shopping Don’t get what you want. You might order something, and what arrives is not what you wanted. You might order something that never arrives. You might order something, and something happens to it during the shipping process. In these cases, the seller is supposed to correct the mistake without charging you more money or refund your money. online retailers often have different approaches. You are usually given information on how to resolve your problem or asked to customer service. Because customer service is so important, they will try to fix the problem fast. You might end up paying shipping twice if you are asked to return the merchandise. When dealing with an auction site, the process is different. Although many offer dispute resolution processes, you might be out of luck if the seller is not acting in good faith. If it never arrives, the law states that retailers have to provide items within 30 days. If not, you can get a full refund. You can’t be billed on your credit card if it doesn’t arrive. Be aware of buying from foreign companies. If you have problems with your item that you purchased from an overseas company, you might have trouble resolving your problems. Before you order, be sure you understand how the item is priced and when it is converted to pounds; whether the retailer sends products to other countries; how long it takes to process the order; and the taxes involved. If you have a mistake in the order shipped to you, the resolution might have to be done in your local court. For example, you might have to visit China to resolve your issue. Better bet is to pick resellers in your country or avoid international buying. Watch out for scams. Legitimate retailers will have secure sites for paying, tell you upfront how to return something, and bend over backwards to help you if you have a problem. Illegitimate sites don’t offer any of these protections. Specifically, avoid grey market items that skirt regulations or are illegal items, extended service contracts, exuberantly high shipping rates, and warranty scams. You also might come across sites that are designed to steal your credit card information or identity. You also want to avoid any website that is a forgery of another or a phishing site. Be careful of price. When you are buying online, you might notice that the store price is different from the online price. Sometimes, this is meant to encourage people to buy online, so you’ll get more discounts online than from buying from the store. However, customers are likely to be frustrated and take their business to another retailer. If you own a store, keep your prices the same. If you are the customer, pick the sites that have the same price in-house as on-line. Pay attention to signs. You search online and see a promotion offered on-line if customers come to the store. However, the store downplays the promotion. The customers end up paying too much for the same item, which causes more frustration. Take note of promotions online and bring that knowledge with you to the store. Retailers need to step up and make sure signs are consistent on both the website and the store. Customer service is lacking. If you are shopping online and have a question or a problem, you sometimes can hit a chat button and get it resolved immediately. If you are shopping in a store, you sometimes have to search through the whole store or ask three people who can’t answer your question. The reverse is also true. You can be online and get only a computer to answer your questions while in the store, everyone is there to help. You should be treated to excellent customer service regardless of where you are buying.
