What does life look like when your work is easy?
You get up in the morning and go to work doing something that you really love doing. Oh, you might still have to work hard at it, but it’s more like playing hard than working hard. When you’re playing hard, challenges are fun, invigorating, and you look forward to them. There’s no sense of dread or drudgery or boredom.
Then when you’re done with work for the day, you come home in a good mood, able to be fully present with the important people in your life, not brooding or resentful over your work situation, always wishing things were different than they are. You might still think about work in your off time, but your thoughts will have a joyful vibe, rather than a tense or sad negative vibe.
You’ll be able to do whatever you like to do for recreation just for the pure fun of it, and not to escape the pressures and negativity of work that drains your spirit. You won’t need to engage in any unhealthy or risky escapist behaviors because there won’t be anything to escape from.
So what do you do to get from here where you are to over there where the easy work is?
First, make a list. Write down everything you love to do, and everything you find easy. What do you just naturally enjoy? There will be things that you are just naturally good at and that are fun for you.
Now, if none of these sound like you could make any money at them, start brainstorming how they can be approached in a way that’s profitable. You might want to sit down with a trusted friend or a couple of friends and play this game. Do you love sports, but pro sports is out of the question for you? Look at every other career that is sports related from writing to maintenance at the stadium. Don’t leave anything out.
But don’t include on your list things people tell you that you should do, although sometimes someone might point out something to you about an area where you’re just naturally good that you hadn’t thought about. That’s OK.
Here’s the point: you need to find what gets your motor running, not what someone else, no matter how wise, how successful, or how loving thinks you should do. If you love it, you know you love it, so go for it no matter what anyone else thinks. There’s usually some way to get involved in a paying way with something you really like.
Or maybe there’s a way to think about the work you do now in a way that makes it more fun for you. How is your work like golf? Or like car racing? Or bird watching? Or reading books, going to movies, quilting, dancing….?
You can take just about any job and think about it in a way that’s fun. Because the truth is, for a lot of reasons, sometimes you can’t switch jobs as quickly as that. But even if you never find “the” job, you can almost always find a way to think about it in a way that makes it more fun than you ever thought possible.
As you’re thinking about all this, don’t spend huge amounts of time focusing on correcting your weaknesses. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to improve, but it does mean to focus on what you’re naturally good at.
For instance, someone who’s a naturally good shortstop but not a particularly good pitcher shouldn’t waste their time trying to be a better pitcher. But do work with focus on being the best shortstop you can be and improving those skills while you have a great time!
Work takes a massive amount of our lives. Life is meant to be enjoyed. That’s real success, not the amount of money in your bank or the car you drive or the kind of house you live in. If you’re enjoying life, then you are a huge success. And one of the keys to enjoying life is finding – or creating – work that’s easy.
