Have you thought about writing a book? I hope so. I hope you have the image of your published book firmly fixed in your mind. Getting a big dream implanted in your psyche can invigorate your writing and make you want to bring pen to paper more often.

What can you write about?

Your book can be a collection of short stories about your childhood or a book of love poems written for your one great love. You can write about a favorite hobby. I know for a fact, a whole bunch of people don’t know anything about twitter, yet there are books written about it. I bet you have an idea for a book that has been taking shape in your heart for a long time. You can be a trailblazer and start the trend for your hobby or interest.

What should you do first? Create your book cover.

It may seem odd to have your book cover before you have a book written. Creating a cover for your book, firmly plants in your mind the reality of the book when it is finally published. Brides fill scrapbooks with images of their weddings years before their beloved has showed up at the door. Why not establish yourself as author way before a publisher hands you a contract?

What would your book cover look like?

Can you see it? If not, look at your favorite books. Take note of the colors, the text, and the feel of a book. Use some of the elements you like the most and incorporate it into your book cover. If you are not artistic then just cut your name and a title and paste it on another book. Put the book on a table or bookshelf. Make certain it is something you can see every day. Pick it up and say, “This is my book.”

What should you do next?

Write.

The end of the year is always a good time to evaluate what you have done and what is left undone.

To will is to select a goal, determine a course of action that will bring one to that goal, and then hold to that action till the goal is reached. The key is action. Michael Hanson

The next step is right in front of you. Learn but take action. Take your dreams and turn them into reality. It is as simple as writing everyday. Pick fifteen minutes while waiting on line or on hold with customer service. Skip one television show a week to write. Put your goals first. Make your book cover, look at it every day, and know that you can achieve something that is important to you.

Writing Prompt Ideas:

Visualize: Image what your life will look like with dreams fulfilled. How do you look? How do you feel? Visualizing helps draw the desired result closer to you. Write the story of your goal fulfilled. Is it a review of the book/movie/play you finally wrote? Put lots of detail in there. Describe picking up your award. What are you wearing? Who do you thank? How does it feel?
