Social scientists have determined that there are people who look at the world with an internal locus of control, or with an exte
al locus of control. What does all that mean?

Well, locus means location—can you see the word? Briefly, an internal locus of control means that they believe they can be proactive in the world and create things. They determine, to vast, vast dimensions, the way their life turns out and the experiences they encounter.

People with an exte
al locus of control believe that other people do it to them—the job, the boss, the economy.

For those with an internal locus, when the economy goes south, they start thinking of ways to benefit from being south. Do you catch my drift?

They know they need to be a little bit creative, to keep thinking, to be flexible, to keep moving. Why? Because they know that, "If it is to be, it is up to me."

Exte
al locus people are going down the tubes, they're losing their homes, their fortunes, their savings. They don't have any idea what the world can bring.

Well, do I need to suggest to you that as an achiever, you already have—or currently as an achiever in mentoring, you are now adopting—the internal locus of control?

Hey, some people have said maybe it's just a belief, a feeling of certainty. I would say if that's what it takes—and I've said this and been quoted on it a number of times—pretend. Enter into it fully, like you would if you were a kid. Pretend. Forget that you're pretending—get that far into it. Adopt it for a while, and see what happens.

If you believe that it's happening outside you, there's nothing you can do about it—and that is a good reason to get a blanket and to whimper when things are rumbling all around you.

Or get active, if you have an internal locus of control, knowing it’s a world of cause and effect, knowing what effect you want.

Do I need to remind you that you are all about the internal locus of control? You understand proactivity, you understand what you think about you bring about, that your thoughts are seeds. The nature and character of your thoughts manifests in your reality in any economy, at any time.

Because the traits of the person with the internal locus of control are definiteness of purpose, determination, flexibility, disce
ment, study, organized specialized knowledge, planning, and—above all—acting, and of course adjusting, which is the marketer's way.

Take it from me. I'm glad to know you, achiever, because you have adopted an internal locus of control. You know who's the boss in your life and affairs.

I was watching my six and nine year old daughters playing the other morning when suddenly there was a barrage of I Hate You and I Don't Like You Anymore statements flying about the room. Of course, it was just a moment of disagreement in child play, but the thoughts and feelings were real enough to them at that moment.
