Food cravings are one of the main reasons people find it hard to start, and stick with, a plant-based eating protocol.
Yet, if you can make it through the first few days, most people find the unhealthy cravings disappear to be replaced by healthy cravings.
As one member of the Plant Based Eating for Health Facebook group said, “I’ve found out, the more I stick with plant based, the less I crave “junk food”, meat & dairy. I never ever thought I’d get to this point but here I am. Freedom!”
This reminded me of my journey with giving up alcohol 36 years ago. I seriously couldn’t imagine my life without alcohol, but it had become such a problem for me, I HAD to make a change.
There was a point in my life I couldn’t live without it. Just like I couldn’t live without processed sugar, junk food and all the unhealthy choices I made.
In the short term, the elimination of unhealthy lifestyle choices seemed harder than sticking with it. But like many things, when we reach the place of being sick and tired of being sick and tired, we make the change.
Many people find as they transition into a new way of eating, they struggle with cravings for old, familiar foods they once enjoyed.
This is not because they are weak. It’s because food manufactures have invested millions upon millions of dollars to hook you in … for life.
Food Addictions Are Scientifically Created
According to Matt Bennet, “Processed and other junk foods are pervasive in Western societies. From birthday cake and ice cream, to potato chips, candy, and soda, most of us have loved junk food from an early age.
“These foods are high in calories and include preservatives, flavor enhancers, salt, oils, and refined sugars.
“This overstimulates our taste buds and causes natural plant foods to taste bland and unappealing. The more we consume stimulating junk foods, the more difficult it is to stop eating them.
“Organizations even hire scientists to find ways of making their foods as physically addicting as possible.” Full article https://vegbyte.com/how-to-stop-food-cravings/
When you realize that you’ve been led into a life of food addiction, the game changes. Now you can do something about it.
Easy vs Simple
Will it be easy? No! For most people it will be downright hard, but it WILL be worth it.
Although not easy, it is very simple. Simple in that there are more and more people moving into a plant-based lifestyle. Simple in that there are plenty of support groups on Facebook to join where you can surround yourself with others who are on the plant-based lifestyle journey. Simple in that, if you want health more than you want instant gratification, you can do it.
One of the first things to do is remove all junk food, sugary foods and temptation foods from your home, office and car. This is likely one of the most important steps to take.
Get rid of the “I’ll start tomorrow” mentality. Start right here, right now. Tomorrow never comes. Today is your point of power.
Fill your refrigerator with healthy fruits and vegetables. Stock up on beans and legumes, spices and other items that you can create fun meals with.
Build a personal library of books you can refer to for recipes, insights and encouragement. One I always recommend is, Eat To Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. A must have for anyone new to the plant based lifestyle.

The bottom line is this; when you go plant based and adhere to a true whole food way of eating, your health will improve, you’ll have more energy, your moods will stabilize, and you will take control of your life. Additionally, your cravings will disappear.
