Alan Detwiler grew up on a small farm. The weather and the natural world are very much a part of living on a farm. On a farm, everyday observations demonstrate how plants and animals grow and develop and how weather and climate interact with living things. Alan and anyone growing up on a farm knows that our food supply is very much dependant on how much it rains, when it rains, and how warm or cold it is.

Genetics and disease are topics of special conce to anyone living on a farm. Farm crops and farm animals are not the plants and animals of the wild. They have been genetically altered by human intervention. Farmers are especially aware of those differences and how genetics produce those differences. Farm animals are in constant threat of disease. It is not uncommon for farmers to loose substantial numbers of their animals to disease.

Farm living, plus an interest in science gave Alan the background for writing Earth's Edge which examines drastic global warming, epidemic, and future science. Those two threats are very serious and are perhaps likely to drastically affect our lives. The consequences of either of those calamities are bound to be unpleasant, but why react with anxiety? Wouldn't a better reaction be to take action to be prepared and feel good that you have done so?

Alan writes to explore ideas and to discover ways to more enjoy life. His method is to use the ideas of others, add anything his own experiences and observations can contribute, and finally to use imagination to add new ideas for appreciating all that is good.

Alan Detwiler is the author of the ebook, Earth's Edge, a speculative science fiction novella describing a pandemic, global warming, and alien contact. Earth's Edge is available as a Kindle ebook at www.amazon.com/dp/B004UMP1HQ/ and as a Nook book at http://search.ba esandnoble.com/Earths-Edge/Alan-Detwiler/e/2940012379801/

Nothing is as certain as change. But no one can know just how much things are going to change - and how fast. History gives us some insight. Wars, plagues, famines, political upheavals... they all seem remote partly because, for most of us, we did not directly experience them. But they did happen and I think it is fair to say that, in general, each such event was largely unexpected. Unexpected changes are the norm.

It seems there is a consensus that the earth is warming and the cause is rising concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. There are some serious flaws in the reasoning that leads to that conclusion. If CO2 causes warming, as CO2 levels rise, temperatures would rise. Data from ice cores obtained from ancient ice in Antarctica and Greenland show a different scenario. Air temperatures rose first, CO2 rose many years later. Likewise, when climate went from hot to cold, temperatures fell first, then years later CO2 levels decreased. See [1]. Corroborating data is presented at [2].

People have a built-in capacity and desire to think about and emulate that which is better and that which is ideal. God is all powerful, all knowing, beyond moral infallibility, has infinite wisdom, and perfect judgement. The concept of God partially fullfills the human desire to be perfect. The faithful strive to follow the commandments of their perfect god and in so doing are being as perfect as their fallibilities allow.

Earth's Edge has what makes science fiction good. The story demonstrates that attitude and perseverance bring about changes that will continually improve mankind's future. Science and the human spirit are the elements that drive progress. We can expect setbacks and difficult times, but the human parade will march gallantly onward far into the future. And along the way there will be wonders to amaze us and propel our expectations of a bright future. That is the basic premise of Earth's Edge. It is a realistic portrayal of how some of the challenges we face might play out.

People might have to go back to living as people did a century or more ago. There are half a dozen events that could cause that to happen. Cataclysmic events have occurred before and it seems certain they will continue to repeatedly occur.

Science fiction describes a world more wonderous and better than our more ordinary real world. It is the world and the universe as it can be imagined to be. What the author imagined is presented as real and to an extent we experience the author's vision as being real. Before us are the wonders that technology has yet to produce, marvelous devices that correct what is wrong with the real world and give us that which we want from the real world. The preceived reality of those devices tells us that they will someday be available for our use.

Out of the billions of stars it would seem some would have planets with the same conditions that gave rise to life on earth. Considering the huge number of solar systems, it seems likely that many extra terrestrial civilizations have evolved throughout the universe. By chance many civilization would have started before earth's civilization. Those early starters would likely be more technically advanced than we are. So why haven't we gotten radio messages from alien civilizations? There are several apparent possibilities.

The earth is warming. It seems most scientists think humans are at least partly responsible. If the scientists are right, we should all work together to reduce how much CO2 we are putting into the atmosphere.
