Our pet parents are grateful when they see the best in us. We wag our tails as we listen to them tell the other pet parents on our walks just how smart, cute, agile and comforting we are. Sometimes though, they laugh when they talk about the worst of our behavior rather than the best that they see in us pets.

Pet parents can use a value-added method to save on the costs of pet ownership. For example, when dog owners acquire a puppy, they may have the initial costs in mind such as purchase/adoption fees; spaying or neutering; training fees and supplies and general supplies such as bowls, crates, leashes and brushes. This total could amount to over $2000.

Have you wanted to have a healthy pet yet have lower expenses for everyday pet products? According to a recent survey of pet owners by Pet Business magazine, 37% of pet consumers prefer to shop at mass merchandisers, primarily for price and convenience. This preference is due, in part, to the sagging economy and fluctuating gas prices. Convenience and selection determine where 60% of pet consumers shop for pet food, rather than just shopping for less expensive pet food. Most people prefer to buy their pet food at supermarkets (39%) or mass merchandizers (32%).

What is working now for animal lovers that chose to be in a pet-related business? In the past, pet businesses were primarily brick and mortar. The family-owned pet store is harder to find, perhaps because the distribution of pet products to the consumer is changing also. In some cases, manufacturers have bypassed the costly middleman serving regional territories. Megastores have capitalized on people’s love for their pets and have a greater profit margin since they can buy in larger quantities at lower prices than the smaller stores.

As a child growing up, I was taught that I was to be seen and not heard; therefore I listened. It was easy for me to listen. They always seemed to be poking through as a constant reminder that I was to listen. I was drawn to the unconditional love of animals. It didn’t matter to them what I looked like. I could talk to them, and they would listen. We bonded with love and

Breedism is a word coined by dog owners to define breed discrimination. Some people feel that breedism is to dogs what racism is to people. Victoria Stilwell on her “Positively” blog brought up the case of Lennox, a dog that was confiscated by the authorities in Belfast, Ireland simply because he looked like a “Pit Bull” type. (Lennox is a Labrador/Pit Bull mix). This breed has been classified as dangerous regardless of the dog’s temperament, behavioral history or owner’s actions.
