If I’d heard it once, I’d heard it 100 times. Same record. Same song. Sure the jacket covers, labels, and package shapes were different, but basically it was the same old refrain: “I’m not in love with my partner any more.” By way of introduction, the pair had blurted out, “We’ve decided to split up, and we want to figure out why we didn’t stay in love so we don’t make the same mistakes with our next partners.”

It had nothing to do with not wanting their help. Rather it had everything to do with learned behavior, of avoiding inconvenience to others whenever possible. “I’ll be fine,” I had assured my friends.

©Arlene R. Taylor PhD One of the secret causes of stress plaguing millions ofrnpeople is unforgiveness. ï¾Don Colbert MD The woman made her way slowly and painfully across my office and into a chair. ©Arlene R. Taylor PhD Entering the lobby, I walked right into high drama. The principle actor was a slim young woman who was fairly vibrating with emotion. “That’s insulting, demeaning, sexist, racist, and you WILL pay for it!” she screamed, her long pony tail racing in circles.

©Arlene R. Taylor PhD “Do you like growing older?” The emphasis was definitely on the word like. Momentarily startled, I turned toward the questioner, a program participant at the EduQuest Road Scholar event for which I was the main speaker. The question had been flung in my direction smack-dab in the middle of one of my presentations, so I replied, "Let me ponder that for a while and I'll get back to you." I'd never been asked that specific question before, at least not in so many words, so I have pondered it. A lot. And I've come up with a few musings.
