Barbara Sher is a business owner, career counselor, and best-selling author on goal achievement and teamwork. She has presented her seminars and workshops to people throughout the world for professional organizations, colleges, corporations, and government agencies. She also consults with clients in her New York office.

In 1972, Sher invented Success Teams—small groups in which members help each other make their dreams come true. Today, Sher’s teams are operating across the globe. She is also the author of four books, including Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want, which has sold over one million copies. Readers of the book will learn effective strategies for making real change in their lives.

Sher discovered that many people didn’t know what they would really love to do. She began hosting problem-solving sessions and developing dozens of powerful techniques that freed people from “goal-paralysis.” Her innovative techniques for overcoming resistance have been widely accepted by psychologists and career counselors and made her second book, I Could Do Anything if I Only Knew What It Was, a New York Times bestseller.

• Doing is a quantum leap from imagining. Thinking about swimming isn’t much like actually getting in the water.

• What will determine the course of your life more than any other thing is whether or not you’re willing to tolerate necessary discomfort.

How to get started

Barbara Sher has written several wonderful books, and it was a challenge for me to determine the best way to get started. Two books stand out in my mind: Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want and I Could Do Anything if I Only Knew What It Was. You will benefit from reading either work.

Wishcraft raised Sher’s standing to that of a renowned expert in the Self Improvement community. The book’s exercises and games show you how to brainstorm and turn your ideas into action. “This book is designed to help you find the good life,” Sher says, and to “crave work that will spark you into excitement and energy.”

Her follow-up to Wishcraft was I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was. First off, it’s a great title. It includes information like “How to get off the fast track—and on to the right track,” “First aid techniques for paralyzing chronic negativity,” and “How to regroup when you’ve lost your big dream.” Sher provides a practical approach for finding the career for you.
