5 Reasons to use flipcharts over PowerPoint
POWERPOINT SLIDES It seems that PowerPoint has become the standard when presenting, especially in the corporate world. This despite the fact that most slides are as boring as the screen they’re displayed on, with way too much information. No wonder there’s a collective sigh in the audience when someone reaches for their wireless presenter. Here’s why I prefer a good old fashioned flip-chart instead. 1. IT INCLUDES THE AUDIENCE

The one thing that is virtually guaranteed to kill any presentation
There are many ways to sink a presentation: ** Standing with your back to the audience ** Droning on and on and on (and on) ** Waffling and rambling ** Having information-overload slides ** Being arrogant and superior ** Moving around like a tennis ball at Wimbledon These can all detract from your message, but none of them come close to the real presentation killer, and here it is. HAVING A MONOLOGUE Being the only one that speaks during your presentation is like having friends over for dinner and not allowing them to say anything.

The easiest ways to annoy your audience
I recently did a poll where I asked participants which speaker/presenter behaviours they find most annoying or off-putting. Here’s what they said: 1. Talking for long periods of time without a break or engaging the audience. 2. Talking too fast. 3. Using language (concepts. acronyms etc.) that hasn’t been explained. 4. Say “uhmm” a lot. 5. Read their presentation or slides. 6. Focusing too much on and giving irrelevant detail about themselves. 7. Not engaging the audience and not including everyone at the beginning.

Why I avoid white boards during presentations
THE TREND White boards are popular among presenters, especially for corporate presentations. Here’s why I prefer to avoid them and use a flip-chart instead (also read here why I avoid PowerPoint: https://fallinlovewithpresenting.com/why-i-avoid-whiteboards-during-presentations/). DELETING YOUR CONTENT WITH A BRUSH STROKE There is something about simply wiping clean what you’ve put on a white board that renders it unimportant.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU ATTEND A PUBLIC SPEAKING COURSE
When you attend a public speaking course, make sure they’ve got this covered. There are many courses out there. Based on my own experience of attending some of these and what others tell me, some very damaging teaching styles are sometimes used, like: Videos of participants presenting are shown to the entire class and then all the ‘mistakes’ are pointed out (sometimes very unskilfully). Participants are put on the spot to ‘perform’ in front of the whole class. When they freeze up they are ‘forced’ to blunder their way through it.
