Bethany Butzer, Ph.D., author of The Antidepressant Antidote, is a Mental Health & Wellness Advisor who specializes in helping her clients reduce stress, anxiety, and sadness. She provides life coaching, workshops, and yoga classes that inspire people to improve their quality of life, reach their full potential, meet their goals, and get off antidepressant medication
Dr. Butzer received her Ph.D. in Psychology in 2008 from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Her early research focused on anxiety and depression. After spending several years studying psychopathology, she changed her focus to positive psychology, which emphasizes the development of human strength and potential.
Dr. Butzer's recent research focuses on the psychology of romantic relationships. She is also currently collaborating with Kripalu's Institute for Extraordinary Living and Harvard Medical School to conduct research on the effects of yoga on well-being. After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Butzer worked for close to 2 years in the private sector as a Research Analyst for Info-Tech Research Group, a leading IT Research Firm.
Dr. Butzer is a certified yoga teacher and has completed over 200 hours of training in yoga postures, philosophy, breathing techniques, meditation, anatomy, and ayurveda. She has also received life coaching training from the Coaches Training Institute (CTI), and has her first degree Reiki certification. She is also a member of the Canadian Yoga Alliance (CYA) and the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).
Dr. Butzer has published professional papers in several leading Psychological jou
als, including Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and Personal Relationships. She has also won numerous national and international awards for her achievements, such as theMartin E. P. Seligman Award for Outstanding Dissertation Research in Positive Psychology, and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Canadian Graduate Scholarship (CGS).
A unique aspect of Dr. Butzer’s approach is that she combines her professional training with her personal experience to provide services that are both empathetic and effective. She has personally overcome the obstacles of a rocky childhood, anxiety, depression, and a dependence on antidepressant medication. She has experienced grief, loss, abuse, abandonment, burnout, and almost everything in between. She has been to doctors, therapists, psychiatrists, and has tried many forms of alte
ative health. And she has come out on the other side.
Based on her familiarity with both the dark and light sides of life, Dr. Butzer’s style is down to earth and approachable, and she has an extensive knowledge of the services that are available to those in need.
