I have the great good fortune of living in Guatemala, a country in which a 5,000 year old tradition of paganism and witchcraft is still very much alive and flourishing. I have had the privilege of studying with a very gifted Ajk’ihab’ ("daycounter", or Mayan priest), and of having met many others. Since even Mayan priests read newspapers and see the telly now and again, they are exposed to our kwashru (craziness), and occasionally they have asked me, "What is this about a 2012 Mayan Prophecy?

Whenever I hear some spiritual guru proclaim that all you gotta do is "just think happy thoughts!", it makes me want to pop him one upside the head and see how long he can keep on thinking his "happy thoughts."

“Someday there will be a great awakening when we know that this is all a great dream. Yet the stupid believe they are awake, busily and brightly assuming they understand things, calling this man ruler, that one herdsman – how dense! Confucius and you are both dreaming! And when I say you are dreaming, I am dreaming, too. Words like these will be labeled the Supreme Swindle. Yet, after ten thousand generations, a great sage may appear who will know their meaning, and it will still be as though he appeared with astonishing speed. …r

Plants’ experience of being in the world is very different from the experience of us animals. Because plants cannot move about, they exist in a state of profound acceptance and peace within themselves. Emotions such as fear, hate, jealousy, possessiveness, etc. are wholly unknown to plants and would serve no useful purpose. On the other hand, plants are capable of experiencing a wide range of higher emotions the like of which we animals could scarcely conceive.

Materialistic science,1 like most fundamentalist religions, is extremely unreasoning and bigoted. When confronted with phenomena which don’t fit its presuppositions, it closes its eyes and pretends that such phenomena don’t exist. There is plenty of evidence, from all times and civilizations, that magic and astrology work, that spirits exist and can communicate with people, and so on. Indeed, about the only civilization on earth up to this time which rejects these notions is ours. “We know better now” say the scientists. How do they know this?

Love relationships fail because at no time in our training by society are we given a factual model of what a love relationship is, or how to make one succeed. There are fundamentally three levels on which intimate relationships operate, and our social training only prepares us to deal with one of them – the most superficial one – and even that one ineptly. This superficial level is called the expectations level. It is usually the only level we address consciously.

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Bob Makransky

What we are trying to do with astrology is to tune into the ambient rhythms of the cosmos. We tend to be alienated from the universal harmonies because of our stressful life styles: we feel disconnected, isolated, powerless, adrift and alone in an uncaring universe. We have lost our sense of being part of an ete al, ongoing process. Astrology can help us to regain our sense of connection to the universe and to the earth by teaching us how to look at our daily lives as a series of lessons. Astrology teaches detachment: we learn that by paying attention to and adapting to the cosmic rhythms, we can come to a deeper sense of connection to the universe and a greater sense meaning and purpose in our personal lives.

How to get started

The best way to get started is to subscribe to Magical Almanac, a free monthly ezine of astrology and magic, by sending an e-mail to: MagicalAlmanac-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. You can also subscribe (and view past issues) at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MagicalAlmanac. Magical Almanac lists the major astrological events each month with information on how to take advantage of them. The Magical Almanac files (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MagicalAlmanac/files/) are chock full of some great articles on getting started using astrology; there are also lots of how-to articles on beginning magic such as how to channel spirit guides, how to run past life regressions, and how to use nature spirits.

The diligent student (and astrology is indeed a study – a life-long study) will want to acquire a good introductory volume on the symbols and basic rules of astrology. Ronald Davison’s Astrology is not only the best of these, it is also one of the least expensive. There are myriads of websites which will calculate your natal horoscope chart for free. Free software to calculate horoscopes can be downloaded from: http://www.astrowin.org/ or http://www.magitech.com/%7Ecruiser1/astrolog.htm.
