I am a married mother of four. My husband and I have been married for 30 years. I work full time as an account executive. The kids are all grown (from 20 -27) and living on their own or still in college. As they began to scatter I started an online family album with stories and photos of all our crazy but fun family celebrations. It then expanded into a "how to do it" resource and was renamed Celebration Ideas Online. I had been getting so many call from friends who were asking for ideas and instructions on some of the projects, parties, and holiday celebrations that went on around our home that I could now direct them to the site. From there, Celebration Ideas Online has been slowly discovered on the world wide web and traffic is building from all over the world. Amazing! I get such wonderful thank you emails from my viewers who tell me about how they used some and even improved on some of these ideas. It has been a rewarding experience.

My husband and I invested enormous amounts of time with the kids and their activities when they were all home. Our house was always filled with friends and family and there was always something going on! As I reflect back, I think it was that foundation that has made us such a close family. Even with the kids all out of the house, we remain close and connected. The website I developed is an attempt to share some of these fun memories for families that want to begin creating their own. Our family has been so blessed with strong roots and I truly believe that all those years of craziness with the parties, school and sports volunteering, holiday celebrations are at the core of our foundation.

Having Family Holiday Traditions adds a wonderful dimension to your holiday season. There is so much emphasis on the the whole gift selection, gift buying aspect of Christmas, that sometimes that becomes the main focus of the holidays. It shouldn’t be that way. By starting some family traditions, you will add balance to your holiday celebration as well as fun and laughter. Family traditions also provide roots for your children that will bring them great memories in years to come. They also provide a way to instill a sense of family within your children.

New Year’s Eve.. a night to say good bye to the old and ring in the new.. For many people it is a night of revelry and fancy festivities. At our home it has always been a night of family and friends gathering together for food and fun. When our children were little, and we were much younger, they hated for us to go out on New Year’s Eve, even when I bribed them with their favorite babysitter, who I had booked months in advance.

Valentines Day, February 14th, is a fun day for both young and old! It is a day to think of those we love and celebrate friendship and kindness. It was one of my favorite winter holidays when the kids were younger as I loved all the hoopla of the parties in school, Scouts and Sunday School. It was a break from the winter doldrums! I loved going to the store to let them each pick out their own Valentines. Back then "computer printables" were not in the vocabulary, if you can believe it! We bought the old fashioned boxed cards that you tore apart on the perforated lines.

Thanksgiving is just two weeks away and the planning is already started at our home. For over 15 years, we have hosted Thanksgiving weekend for all the family. The guest list runs for 15 to 30 depending on who can travel in any given year. It is my most favorite holiday to celebrate. I have it down to a science and can pull it off without stress or anxiety.

Getting into college and the whole college application process can be a stressful journey for both students and parents alike. From 1999 through 2005, as a mother of four, I spend endless hours helping, advising and consoling our children as they were applying to colleges. Each of our four children are unique individuals who needed different things from us as parents as they were applying to colleges. We had self-directed child, who virtually did it all himself. We had a procrastinator who required more guidance and prodding.
