Myths about foods people with diabetes should eat or not eat are numerous. Potatoes are one of these foods that have gotten a very bad wrap, and because potatoes are known to be a “starchy” vegetable (and break down into sugar), it is believed by many misinformed people that they should be completely avoided in those with diabetes. Childhood obesity has become a national healthcare crisis in recent years. Children who are obese as preschoolers are at increased risk for adolescent and adult obesity, as well as an increased risk of developing many chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), asthma, and sleep apnea, as well as emotional problems such as low self-esteem and depression. Before you consider beginning yet another “diet,” you might first consider learning what your “number” is. You are a very unique individual. In addition to having your own social security number, your own PIN numbers, your own phone numbers, there is yet another number that is unique to you. That number is your METABOLIC RATE, a representation of your metabolism. This is a number that is expressed in calories per day, and it is the number of calories your body needs for vital body functions, such as circulation, brain function, breathing, and temperature control.

In recent years, scientists have found that some of the complications of obesity, which include diabetes, hypertension, insulin resistance, and heart disease, were more clearly related to the central distribution of fat (excessive fat tissue in the abdominal region), than to overall level of obesity. This central location of fat and the release of fatty acids and cytokines (powerful chemical substances secreted by cells) from the enlarged fat cells in this area, provide the major agents that define the Metabolic Syndrome. What is the Metabolic Syndrome?

Michele G. Sullivan of "Clinical Endocrinology News" reported in its April 2015 issue, something that the "functional medicine" world has been talking about for years----"How Your Microbiome (the genetic material of your gut bacteria) may be driving the course of diabetes and obesity." Chocolate contains polyphenols, which are antioxidants that can prevent cancer, prevent heart disease, enhance our immune system, and give us a feeling of well-being. Polyphenols help the body’s cells resist damage from free radicals, which damage cell structure and are formed in our normal body processes. Polyphenols also help inhibit platelet aggregation and activation, meaning they help prevent platelets from clumping together, therefore reducing the risk of arteriosclerosis.
