In my work as a speaker on dreams, one key point stands out overall: in most cases dreams are in some way helping individuals to prepare for change. n Dreams of fallen elevators, racing cars or homes with windows which can't be opened, all in some way reflect the relationship between the ...

At times we are moved to change something in our patterns of behavior, work, or relationships. This instinctive urge drives us on in spite of the discomfort we know our change will inevitably bring. These silent nudges are the clarion call of Soul, as it urges us from a resting place on our ...

Were you aware that radio interviews can catapult you to stardom as an expert or author? In fact, authors Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield, as part of their marketing plan for the Chicken Soup for the Soul label, made one radio appearance a day. It worked so well that today they are two of ...

Very few today realize the power they could harness if they invested some time in their dreams. I have kept a journal for over 30 years and some startling realizations and practical insights have been given me through my dreams. Dreams give us a 360% viewpoint around a problem, and a deeper, ...

One of my favorite movies, How to Make and American Quilt, is a wonderful allegory about how our choices create our life. The narrator tells us at the end of the story that our good choices bring out the natural colors of the quilt, while our poor choices dull the colors. Making choices that ...

For most people the prospect of having surgery or “going under the knife” is a terrifying prospect. Totally giving over control of your life to a comparative stranger who will make changes to your body. Cut pieces off or out, or sometimes put pieces in – or move pieces around. The idea of ...

Years ago, I had a dream in which I met with Oprah Winfrey. At first I was unclear about her presence in my dreams. Over the years, she returned many times to teach me about myself. She became a sort of dream mentor, helping to form an internal vortex from which a new self within me could take ...

Tired of carrying around an extra twenty pounds? Tired of diets that don’t work? Hypnosis may be the answer for you – no, it doesn’t work miracles. It’s not a magic bullet that immediately makes you love exercise. What it is - is a deep state of relaxation and intense mental focus that can ...

I stood, spade in hand, preparing to dig in the moist soil. My plan was to widen the edge of the garden to make space for still more perennials and annuals. I stood on the shovel, putting my weight behind the long blade, and pushed into the soil. Pulling back the sod, I noticed an object exposed ...

I have a friend who'd been working very hard to put on an innovative "structured networking event" for the Mississauga Board of Trade. As much as I wanted to support her, it was called for 7:00 am. My love for sleep made me question several times if I really needed to go. Each time the answer ...

The Real Work
There is one thing in this world that you must never forget to do. If you forget everything else and not this, there's nothing to worry about; but if you remember everything else and forget this, then you will have done nothing in your life.
It's as if a king has sent you to some country to do a task, and you perform a hundred other services, but not the one he sent you to do. So human beings come to this world to do particular work. That work is the purpose, and each is specific to the person. If you don't do it, it's as though a priceless Indian sword were used to slice rotten meat. It's a golden bowl being used to cook turnips, when one filing from the bowl could buy a hundred suitable pots. It's a knife of the finest tempering nailed into a wall to hang things on. You say, "But look, I'm using the dagger. It's not lying idle." Do you hear how ludicrous that sounds? For a penny, an iron nail could be bought to serve the purpose. You say, "But I spend my energies on lofty enterprises. I study jurisprudence and philosophy and logic and astronomy and medicine and all the rest." But consider why you do those things. They are all branches of yourself. Remember the deep root of your being, the presence of your lord. Give your life to the one who already owns your breath and your moments. If you don't, you will be exactly like the man who takes a precious dagger and hammers it into his kitchen wall for a peg to hold his dipper gourd. You'll be wasting valuable keenness and foolishly ignoring your dignity and your purpose. ~Rumi
