Many of us are actually unaware of the symptoms of depression which include feelings of desperation, compulsive negative thinking, increased or decreased appetite, insomnia or an increased need for sleep, being apart from the social scene, frequently irritated, loss of memory and lowered concentration levels, interest in suicide and death.

On the 6th doctor I visited to look deeper into what these agonizing symptoms I was experiencing could be, I got some interesting advice. The advice I was given was unlike what anyone had ever told me before, and in time it showed me a natural path to overcoming my generalized anxiety disorder. After the numerous tests that came back to this doctor all showing no sign of anything serious, the result was that these symptoms such as my consistent dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pains etc that would ultimately lead me to full blown panic attacks, were all symptoms of anxiety.

The Answer Was Right There I quickly realized that who I surrounded myself with I became! My environment had a massive impact on how I thought, felt and even acted. The more I hung around and practiced with better tennis players than me, the faster I improved my own tennis game. The more anxiety forums I became attached to daily sharing how bad my day went and my fears of the future, the bigger the hole was that i was digging myself into.

It is rather simple to mistakenly take an anxiety attack for a real heart attack. In fact, most casual observers would not even know the difference between the two if they see it happening right before their eyes. The clear signs of an anxiety attack reflect the commonly known signs of a heart attack, with the differences being only apparent if one knows what to look for. Unfortunately, this close similarity also makes it difficult for people to know what to do in the event that a person experiences one or the other.

What a crazy year for me, I started The Anxious Athlete with the hopes of helping people through their anxiety which is now looking like an epidemic of some sorts. I still remember the day I walked out of my home after spending 31 days locked up due to my Agoraphobia, that was some day... I guess you could call it becoming enlightened? Or plain and simply bewilderment. I recognized that day that anxiety isn't something we must try and STOP necessarily, it's something that we truly must in fact experience.

At the end of your life, I want you to be able to look back and marvel at the way you handled your anxiety disorder. I don't want you to look back and think 'what if'? This path you are heading down may be unfamiliar and uncomfortable, but it is the path that you must take. Take it now, take your life back, and begin giving others permission to face their own fears through your actions. They will realize through your success that they have a choice that will lead them on the path to recovery from their anxiety disorder also.

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Dennis Simsek

Rocky once said "it's not about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep going," so i when I struggled for 6 years with GAD and panic, I was looking over a cliff basically and was thinking if I should jump or not literally, I was tired of fightng my inner demons, I was tired of going through hell each and everyday. I found out the key wasn't to drug myself into a zombie like state as was suggested, but to look at the root of the problem and start making changes in my body and psychology, once that was changing and I had an action plan in place that I applied daily the changes came slowly but surely, and with it momentum was built, now I live my life with gratitude that I went through what I did, the meaning changed completely for me and I want to start building relationships with others so that they can follow in my footsteps and end their own suffering.
