What drives human behavior? There are a few schools of thought about what makes humans tick. I use Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Behavior to better understand why we humans do what we do, which includes five elements with multiple aspects in each element: physical survival, safety & security, belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization.

There are a myriad of reasons that people change. Pain, joy, and hope are a few reasons. Debts, a friend's tragic story or a great movie, etc., are a few more. These reasons may inspire us to take action. Yet, whatever our reasons to change, how we perceive information relates to our belief in ourselves, and, ultimately, how successful we become.

Let's be clear. I have some serious 'tude this week! What follows is a channeling of my inner Andy Rooney. It's well and good to offer suggestions. Yet, a growing group of self-help profiteers do that and more. They claim to actually inspire and motivate as they collect their fees, sign books, and sell even more programs and products. I don't know about you, but how can they know what will or will not inspire and motivate me? Are they mind readers too?

Effectively managing change, in all of its various forms, is like working on our roots. Put differently, instead of being whipped about by change, we can use change to develop our minds and hearts. How? Well, through the process of change. That is to say that we can nourish, strengthen, and improve our mental clarity, and, therein, our creativity, wellness, collaboration, performance, happiness, and, yes, success as the seasons of change swirl around us. Thereby nurturing our roots for an abundant harvest year after year.

I was raised by Grandparents who went through the Great-US Depression in the 1930s. So, I have a unique perspective about finances among my peers. Let me just say it. Getting a rein on our budgets is about common sense, effective stress management, as well as longer-term happiness and wellness.

Have you ever observed a conversation from a distance and guessed what was happening from the body posture and gestures of the participants? A childhood friend of mine and I did that for fun. Oh the stories that we'd create. Today I still do it and I could write volumes about this topic: reading faces, socializing, body language, and technology responses. Taking a quick look into what we don't say says is like pulling back the veil on effective communication. Often, there's a bit more going on behind a smiling face than a smiling face.

Effective communication is something that I study extensively as I suspect that how we speak and listen to one another makes or breaks our interactions. What I discovered is this. While we humans may not consistently verbalize or say what we mean, we humans seem to have communication patterns and desires. After taking American Sign Language, a herd of writing and communication-design courses, and supporting thousands of clients with behavior modification and mediation (conflict resolution), I finally feel ready to publish my observations about this as a list.

"Happiness is a choice that requires effort at times" (Aeschylus). How can we stick with a preferred outcome the first day, week, month, and on into a year and beyond? While making a change can feel daunting, change can be approached simply. My personal & professional observation about successfully maintaining healthier choices and/or successful outcomes is this. Doing so means comprehending, learning, experiencing, and adapting to a preferred outcome or change before launching into will power.

"Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life" (Sandra Carey). So how did I release 6 sizes and about 90 plus pounds in 1.5 years? As difficult as it is for me to make myself this vulnerable, I decided to use this opportunity and share that experience. Literally, I move toward my preferred outcome one choice at a time. What do I mean?

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Deone Benninghoven

"Satisfaction is characterized by inner peace. It arises from generosity, honesty and what I call ethical conduct, a way of behaving that respects others’ right to be happy" (extracted on 16 July 2010 from HH The Dalai Lama's Facebook wall at http://www.facebook.com/).

Coaching, what is it?

Definition
ICF (http://www.coachfederation.org/) certified coaching is based on the idea that metacognition – or being aware of one’s own thinking processes – fosters independence in learning. By providing personal insights into the learner’s own thinking processes, action-oriented cognitive coaching further encourages flexiblability, confidence, self-efficacy, and pride as meta-cognition expands.

Basic Elements
Action-oriented coaching involves the modeling of self-appraisal and the self-management of cognition by a facilitator. It also involves learner performance and reflection, internalizing, and generalizing.

Dialogue, both on the part of coach and client, is another prominent aspect of coaching. For example, in the scaffolded instruction technique, teachers and students take turns leading dialogues about texts, asking each other to predict, question, clarify, summarize, and self-appraise (Sections extracted from http://www.funderstanding.com/content/cognitive-coaching on 13 August, 2009).
