People come to see me because they are dissatisfied, unhappy, or suffering. They want to feel good, look good, and have good health, but they don’t know how to make it happen. They’ve been told, by well meaning friends or even therapists, that they have to let go of some thoughts, feelings, or behavior and their failure to do so is a sign of resistance. They’ve been warned that there is something inside of them that is always trying to sabotage them. Many of my patients have been told by past therapists that they have to suffer painful feelings that they have repressed or “stuffed” and only then will they feel better. So they dutifully suffered. But life didn’t get better, just worse. My patients have tried self-help books and have expected success. Nothing changed. Most self-help books have to do with psychology. Now have you ever read a self-help book by a dentist? A surgeon? Imagine a How To book on filling your own cavities or removing your own appendix or brain tumor. Patently ridiculous, of course. But why should psychology be any different? Should you really be able to fix yourself? To pull yourself up by your own bookstraps? If you think so, just try lifting yourself by your shoes. See what I mean? Long ago in my 30 plus year career as a psychologist I discovered that all my patients were suffering the negative effects of past events. Sometimes the events were recent, sometimes decades old. Often the events were major traumas, like sexual assault or physical abuse, or death of a loved one. The events were sometimes isolated instances but more often a series of events over weeks , months, or years. Some patients suffered from events that wouldn’t be considered major trauma – a comment by a parent or teacher, a bad relationship, an embarrassing moment – but suffer they did nevertheless. Simply telling patients that they “have to let go of the past” and “move on” doesn’t work, because they haven’t bee “holding” on in the first place. Instead, think of it this way: People suffer from the past because a deeper part of the mind hasn’t gotten the good news that the event and the meaning the mind has given the event do not exist. Once the deeper part of the mind gets this good news we can say that the event has been cleared. Negative effects from this event finally disappear and energy is released to fuel their movement to what is desired – happiness, vitality, life enhancing behavior. This process of clearing troubling past events is one of the key pieces of my work and is called Rapid Trauma Resolution, which is part of the broader form of psychotherapy I practice called Rapid Resolution Therapy™. As events and issues from the past are resolved, negativity is eliminated and blocks to happiness are removed. Self-esteem improves, confidence swells; there is relaxation in the body and peace and clarity in the mind.
