It seems that almost every culture has a story about the rainbow. Some Native American tribes believe the rainbow is the path that souls take on their way to heaven. The Christian bible portrays the rainbow as God's promise to Noah that He would never again send a flood to destroy the earth. There's a story from Germany which claims the rainbow is actually the symbol of the Greek goddess Iris. And who can forget about Irish leprechauns and their legendary pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

The stove is beeping, flashing an unknow "F2" error message. Outside my office door, Holly is crying for her dinner, even though it's only 4 o'clock. Brother Tim also has "cattitude", waiting for my door to open so he can raid the "forbidden zone" of books, papers, computer cables and other tempting appetizers.

I'm often asked how I got involved in color healing and so I thought I'd share my story here on this first post. In the beginning, there were Crayons and I knew it was good. I received my first box of these waxy creations when I was about three years old, and it led to years of self-imposed coloring therapy. Whenever I felt inspired or just wanted to block out my noisy family, I'd empty the yellow box onto the floor and let the Crayons roll where they may until I caught them and laid them out in front of me like an exotic Oriental fan.

Imagine sitting on a beautiful white sandy beach. The sun is directly overhead and its rays are brilliant and warm as they flow from the top of your head and throughout your body.

If you were to disregard all of the file folders, books and scribbled Post-It notes, one of the first things you'd notice about my office is my fondness for The Wizard of Oz. Along the walls and bookshelves are postcards of Dorothy and The Wicked Witch, a stuffed Scarecrow and a Cowardly Lion hand puppet. There's also an 18-inch rainbow on my desk. It's really a candleholder, a simple black ornamental bridge with small glass votives of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. To me it is a symbol of hope and inspiration, a reminder of how color became my muse.

Feelings. We know that writers depend upon their senses when evoking the right location, scene or character, but one that is rarely discussed is their sense of smell. For example, whenever I smell the scent of sweet orange essential oil, I feel immediately uplifted because it evokes happy memories of the childhood summers I spent riding my bicycle and slurping orange-flavored popsicles.

Every January 1 throughout the world, hordes of human "polar bears" make a mad dash to icy waters for a quick plunge. Why do they brave the elements and the possibility of frostbite and hypothermia? Some say it’s a way to combat depression. Others claim it is a spiritual experience, but I suspect it’s even more than that. They take the plunge for one of the same reasons writers write: they want to prove they’re alive.

I was in the first grade in Anchorage, Alaska when I planted my first seed. Our teacher had the class plant flowers in eggshells and I remember how fearful I was of breaking the delicate white casing before I even had my seeds planted. Teacher stored our humble creations in modest egg cartons on a windowsill, assuring us that after a few weeks of watering, our little seeds would sprout to become a huge bouquet of bright tangerine flowers. All we needed was patience. And you know what? It worked!

Can you imagine if the world was completely void of color? A world where you never saw a garden filled with flowers of every hue, where you never read an adventure from a colorfully illustrated children’s book? What if you had never been introduced to color television and had to settle for boring, black-and-white television every day of your life? What if there were no colored lights in December or dyed Easter eggs and colorful jelly beans in April?

In 2011, I was booked for a physical with my general practitioner. While waiting in the examination room, the nurse gave me a gown and left. I stared at the gown for several minutes because I didn’t know what it was or what to do with it. It was just a piece of fabric to me. A few months after that, I was taking a shower and couldn’t remember how to turn it off. Even though I had taken thousands of showers in that same stall, I panicked, staring at the knob for about three minutes before I finally remembered how to operate the darn thing. I NEVER SAW THAT TICK COMINGr
