Mannie Barling is a lawyer, author and businessman who spent more than thirty years practicing law in the Greater Los Angeles Area. In the 1970s, Mr. Barling served as in-house counsel to two of the first HMOs in Los Angeles including one that treated more than 13,000 patients a month. Mr. Barling actively participated in the management of these clinics as well as convalescent hospitals, including reviewing all medical matters from PSRO (Professional Standards Review Organizations), physician utilization, interviewing doctors,specialists and evaluating malpractice claims.
Mr. Barling helped pioneer Medical Outreach programs and health fairs throughout South Central Los Angeles and Inglewood. He also lobbied on behalf of the clinics and hospitals in the state capital on issues involving changes in health law, patient reimbursements, and hospital and clinic claims for payment from Medicaid and Medicare with such luminaries as health expert Carl Weissburg and Edward L. Masry of Erin Brokovich fame.
Throughout the 1980s, Mr. Barling continued to form and participate in the day-to-day management of medical practices, clinics and ancillary service companies such as x-rays, laboratories and physical therapy units. Throughout the 1990s, Mr. Barling represented the largest factor of medical accounts receivables across the United States negotiating agreements involving the purchase, operation, and management of hospitals, clinics and private practices throughout Southern Califo
ia.
At the same time, Mr. Barling was involved in every phase of restoring an acute care hospital in East Los Angeles and seven clinics serving the Latino community from insolvency at the time of purchase to becoming a $100 million a year medical practice serving the eastside of Los Angeles and parts of Orange County. Along the way, Mr. Barling represented Fortune 400 businessmen, actors and motion picture production companies, as well as serving as a voting member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He has also served as a judge pro tem and arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, arbitrating important cases such as the construction of the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus.
Mr. Barling’s first book on health, Taking Control of Your Life — a Journey to Wellness, is based upon his personal experiences with the treatment of colon cancer and other digestive diseases. The authors' companion book, Mannie’s Diet and Enzyme Formula — A Change of Lifestyle Diet for Arthritis, Inflammation, Gout, Crohn’s, IBD and IBS, coauthored with Ashley F. Brooks, provides answers and illumination for the 79 million plus Americans who suffer the debilitating effects of Crohn’s disease, IBS, IBD, ulcerative colitis and a secondary diagnosis of arthritis, gout and gouty arthritis.

Since neither the FDA nor the food industry is motivated to provide consumers with clear definitions of the difference between hamburger and ground beef or provide adequate information on the contents permitted in the preparation of ground meat and hamburgers, we feel compelled to offer the following information. Do You Know That the Salmonella Caused by the Wright County Eggs Was the Result of Feeding Factory-Farmed Chickens Genetically Modified Corn?
Times have changed. No longer can you just contract salmonella from contaminated or decaying food eaten by mistake. Now, salmonella is transmitted from the hens to the eggs through a genetic change in the hen’s reproductive system that produces a version of salmonella that cannot be discovered through existing testing procedures. This is how it happens. The hens are raised on factory farms where they are confined to cages, often ankle-deep in fecal matter, in overcrowded warehouses like laboratory rats. To hold the cost of feed down and to increase production to meet corporate expectations, the hens are force-fed genetically modified corn (uneatable to humans) that is not their natural food source. Chickens, and hens in particular, thrive on free range delights found in natural pastures. Nature did not design chickens to eat GMO corn, soaked in herbicides and pesticides and spiked with daily doses of antibiotics, any more than it did factory farmed livestock. The GMO corn modifies the DNA of the hens resulting in changes to their reproductive system leading to salmonella. Over a period of time, the daily doses of antibiotics make the hens resistant to bacteria which is compounded by confining the hens in cages in dark warehouses littered with fecal matter. The net result is another outbreak of salmonella with Wright County Eggs of Galt, IA denying they are the cause of the outbreak and the FDA wandering around blindly in the forest of GMO power politics and deception. The industry will point the finger at someone else and this event, like so many other salmonella and E. coli outbreaks, will be pushed under the carpet until the next one happens. Is it a coincidence that all of these outbreaks of salmonella and E. coli are tied to the increase in genetically modified crops used as livestock feed in the last decade, particularly in Iowa where GMO crops dominate the landscape? Right now in the U.S., more than 90% of the crops grown are GMO crops that appear in more than 9,000 products on grocery store shelves. One day the recall of the eggs, the FDA found that Wright County Eggs shipped the balance of their eggs from another factory down the road. In effect, dumping contaminated eggs into supermarkets across the land knowing the risks. Upon learning of Wright County Eggs’ circumvention of the recall, the FDA ordered a second recall of the more than 500 million more contaminated eggs dumped on the market by Wright County Eggs’ corporate management. Shortly after the second recall, the FDA announced that the Wright County Egg farm had been cited numerous times for health violations and paid millions in fines as penalties for non-compliance. In the process, Americans learned that the mega producers of eggs have gone largely unregulated by government agencies responsible for making sure food is safe. The industry has become so incestuous that now only 192 large egg companies own about 95% of laying hens in this country – in many cases controlled by the same individuals. As a shrinking number of companies produce most of the eggs found on grocery store shelves, the actions of one producer mirror the attitude and management of the incestuous industry. You can be certain that the events at other large egg producers are similar if not identical to what is happening in Wright County Iowa. Birds of a feather not only flock together, they meticulously plan their businesses together. This typifies the business decisions made by corporate management around our Nation, more conce
ed with the effect of the recall on their bottom line than they were over the health of Americans. In the case of an FDA that acts more like an impotent hall monitor in a reform school than a government enforcement agency, this is just another episode of toothless enforcement. It really doesn’t matter how this outbreak is resolved because the underlying issue of the dangers of genetically modified corn being force-fed to factory farmed, confined livestock and poultry wallowing in pens full of fecal matter will be squashed by the food industry until next time. And, unless Americans stand up and address the issues of GMO feed, soaked in herbicides and pesticides and shot up with antibiotics, and force-fed to factory farmed poultry and livestock, there will be more outbreaks. Please consider that the average American consumer is buying chickens force-fed on the same GMO corn that is causing salmonella in eggs while being shot up with a solution of 15% salt brine containing MSG. This begs the question of what will happen to humans if they continue to eat foods force-fed in this manner. Emanuel Barling, Jr., along with his wife Ashley F.
