Author, Web site administrator

Gene’s life experiences began on a small farm (yeah, a long time ago…) in the fertile Platte River valley of central Nebraska. His wanderings have taken him through college, the military, two major corporations and into the field of instruction in both the private and public sector. For the past twenty-five plus years, he has devoted much of his time to the study and understanding of the nature (and peculiarities) of mankind and its place and purpose in the universe.

In 2002, Gene established NuPathz.com ( http://www.nupathz.com/ ) for the primary purpose of helping people enrich their lives simply by modifying their thought processes. The organization encourages personal growth through a better understanding of those factors that have contributed to each individual’s present beliefs and life style, and promotes positive questioning of the “truths” that provide the basis for each of our actions.

The NuPathz approach to the self-help process could be considered somewhat unique in that it offers insights into all three of the main influences in our lives – our genetic and environmental influences, our spiritual or religious beliefs and our innate animal instincts for survival and procreation. Because Gene feels strongly that many of us tend to take our lives and the self improvement process far too seriously, he makes liberal use of humor not only in his articles and books but also throughout the NuPathz site. As a result, one can find features ranging from helpful suggestions to combat guilt or a tendency to become angry to a large collection of humorous quotes and bumper stickers as part of an even larger collection of “odds and ends” gleaned from Gene’s weblog.

When once asked about his personal motivations for creating the NuPathz.com web site, Gene replied, “You know, I was fortunate several years ago, to have enough curiosity to start researching to see if I could find out if there wasn’t something I could do to make some changes in my life – to help make things better for myself and my family. With the help of some great authors and other special people in my life, I was finally able to turn my old ship around and start sailing in a better direction. All I’m trying to do now is pass along some of the things I’ve learned. This probably sounds corny as all heck, but I figure if I can make just one person’s life a little easier and a little more fun then I’ve done my job. I’ve accomplished probably one of the main things I was put on this earth to do. You can’t ask for any more than that.”

Gene is presently enjoying a semi-retired lifestyle with his bride, Loy, two dogs, five cats and one obnoxious African Grey parrot in the Ozarks of southern Missouri.

We all have ‘em, don’t we? Thoughts and opinions on our government, climate warming, drug companies, religion, the latest fashions, the best TV programs, diets, raising children, hair styles, house colors and whether or not the gal in the next cube is sleeping with the boss. When you get right down to it, we have an opinion on just about anything you can think of… except for the 4 percent of the population who tend to lose this ability during polls or surveys. Hopefully this is only a temporary affliction. Ask seven people if they think Bush was a good… no, wait… bad example.

A new employee was working the grill at a fast-food restaurant. He had only been on the job a couple of days and of course, was still learning how to prepare the various sandwiches on the menu. He was a good worker and extremely conscientious. He was a good addition to the crew. As the volume of business began to increase on this particular day, you could see his discomfort also increasing. He was under pressure to work a little faster now while at the same time, making sure the food was prepared exactly as expected.

I went to lunch with my number one daughter (chronologically speaking from a reference of arrival time on earth) not too long ago. We went to one of those neat little mom and pop restaurants to grab a burger and listen to some tunes provided by a local vocalist. And yes, it is great to live in a small town in Mid-America where they still do that kind of thing. As we munched on our burgers and fries, we naturally engaged in the usual father-daughter small talk.

He is… she is…, they are… Go ahead. Complete the sentence. Fill in the blank. About anyone you know. What words would you use? Mean, grouchy, controlling, sneaky, nosey, conniving, kind, caring, funny, loving, giving, sexy…? It’s not difficult to do, is it? We can think about anyone we know and almost instantly assign at least one descriptive word – and usually several – to that individual. We can categorize them.

No, no, I’m not referring to you. I personally don’t feel that anyone on this planet is an “idiot” – although it seems there may be a few of us cruising through life a few French fries short of a Happy Meal. But that’s the way life is. We can only play the cards we’re dealt and that’s OK. The title of this piece is not intended to be a personal slam against anyone. Instead, it is basically a three-word synopsis of several of the comments posted to a blog I recently read. That conce s me. In my opinion, it was a pretty good blog.

I remember one of the things Mom used to say when someone had done something that didn’t completely make sense to her was “I’m not sure he (or she) even knows which way is up!” Well Mom, guess what? Ain’t nobody knows which way is up! Yeah, yeah, I know. Most of us if we were ever to be asked that question would point “up” in a direction above our heads and away from the ground we’re standing on.

First the good news. There’s a really, really good chance that we all can do things – make a few changes in our thinking and in our lives – to help us become a happier person. The realistic side of this though, is that some of us probably have the ability and even the opportunity, to be happier than others. Let’s start with a simple definition of happiness: “A feeling of contentedness, delight, enjoyment or satisfaction”. One more… “a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy”. Can you see the problem here?

I frequently like to think about where I am in my life and the things I’ve done – and the things I would still like to accomplish in whatever time I have left here on this old planet. A few mornings ago (I like to do this kind of thing in the morning with a big, hot cup of coffee) the question popped into my head, “What should I focus on next?” Now I’ve been at this personal growth stuff long enough to know that it’s not particularly easy to conduct an honest self-evaluation.

As I begin my transition into the second half-century of my life, there are some things that… huh? Whaddya mean, I shouldn’t lie about stuff like that? Yeah, I know I’m supposed to tell the truth in these articles but that doesn’t mea I can’t fudge just a little once in a while, does it? Not even just a little bit? Once in a while? Well crap!

Our lives are overflowing with negative information from the newspapers, magazines, television and radio. Nations are at war, thousands are dying of starvation and hundreds are killed by natural disasters. There is no avoiding or ignoring the facts. We even receive negativity from our own families and friends every single day. How we deal with this information is up to us. One, we can absorb it all and allow it to negatively dominate our thoughts, emotions, attitudes and our day-to-day lives.

…busy, busy, busy, busy, busy…busy, busy, bus… OK, slap me with a wet diaper! Enough of that silliness. Most you know what I’m talking about though, right? That’s us! Busy. Doing what? Stuff. What kinds of stuff? All kinds of stuff. Like what? You name it. Give me an example. Can’t. Why not? Too busy… OK – that’s it! Blow the danged whistle! We need a Time Out! Holy Smokes, Folks! We’re going outta control. No, not all of us of course.

To a society and civilization that has grown accustomed to having, pursuing and often worshipping the material things in life such as money, houses, cars and physical appearance, it’s not easy to think about dropping any of these from our list of priorities. Many of us have been programmed to believe that these possessions are a measure of our success. They are assumed to be so necessary to our existence that without them we feel worthless - failures in the eyes of our fellow man. Look around you, then look closely at yourself.

As a person thinketh, so are they. – James Allen

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. - The Buddha

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reasons for existing.
