Growing up in a devoted Christian home, I always wondered why some Christian leaders were so different from others. My father being the Head Elder in the congregation, I knew and was known by every member of the board. Some of them really attracted people, while you could not get away fast enough from others. I always wondered WHY?

After being born again at the age of thirty in 1981, I found the answer in Jesus Christ. The difference between leaders, (apart from temperament and personality traits) was that some of them were like Jesus, and others? Well, not quite! This was the beginning of a study that went on for more than twenty years, and which culminated in a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology and Leadership. To me, one of the most powerful statements that Jesus made was: I AM. THE GOOD SHEPHERD!

He changed my life, and I saw His power changing the lives of thousands of others.

In the previous three parts of this series, we discussed the source and direction of power available to Christians. We learnt that Jesus promised the Apostles that they would receive power from on high when the Holy Spirit falls on them, and saw that this actually happened just as Jesus promised. Yet, when we look at the lives of average Christians, it is not uncommon to find a group of powerless individuals.

That we are living in difficult times, is no secret. People who have a negative inclination can identify problems in almost every sphere of life. The world economy apparently reached record lows; there are worldwide health crises with all sorts of pandemics evolving and then we have not even talked about global warming. Truly, the international situation sketches a sordid picture. In response to this, humankind is looking for solutions.

In the first article in this series, we dealt with how Jesus promised the disciples the coming of the comforter, the Holy Spirit, which would come to the followers of Jesus after He left for His Father. Now, taking it on from there... After having been crucified and freeing humankind from the bondage of death, Jesus arose again on the third day and revealed Himself to firstly several individuals, and then larger groups. There was no doubt that Jesus had died and had arisen from the death.

In parts 1 & 2 of this series of articles on the POWER of God in us, we saw that firstly, Jesus promised us the power; secondly, that He paid the full price for the dominion and authority over everything above the earth, on the earth, and beneath the earth. Then thirdly, we saw that His promise came true on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came on all the disciples gathered in the upper room, and miracles was the direct result of that outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

God’s Word, is very outspoken conce ing the leaders of His people. This is the case in both the Old and New Testaments. God’s love for His humankind is such that He will not tolerate leaders that exploitation their subjects neither will He tolerate the abuse of power and authority. Someone reading this opening statement may want to refer the author to leaders that he or she is aware of that does exactly those things. However, we must remember that such abusive leaders will ultimately pay the price for their abuse.

We are now proceeding to the climax of this series of articles on the power of God in us. As we have seen in previous parts, the power comes from God, through the Holy Spirit, after we repent of our sins and receive the salvation of Jesus Christ. Having the power of God is not for personal use or benefit though, but for the goodwill of the Kingdom of God. After returning from their mission, the Apostles that Jesus sent out to minister were delighted with the power that worked through them. Jesus, who knows the heart of men warned them however.

We now reach the climax of this series of articles on Christian Spiritual power. As we saw in the previous article, the power of the Holy Spirit works through believers because of the authority of the name of Jesus. When the sons of Sceva tried to rebuke evil spirits ‘in the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches’, they soon found out that evil spirits had no respect for them. Today still, unbelievers can expect the same results. Recapping this short teaching on the power of God in us, we saw that all human beings are sinners in need of salvation.
