Heather L. McMillan is a virtual assistant and virtual assistant consultant. In 1996, she started working part-time from home as The At Home Secretary by making one page off her Geocities website offering scanning and typing services. Sometime around 2004, Heather was curious about other ways to earn money from home, and she began searching work at home sites. It was then when she discovered what she had been doing part-time since 1996 was called being a virtual assistant. It never dawned on her that a whole industry was popping up around her while she stayed in her little corner working.
By 2005, Heather was making more money part-time from her virtual assistant business than she was earning full-time from employment. Therefore, she walked away from her full-time job, taking up her virtual assistant business full-time instead. Within 2 years, she found herself so popular and in demand, that she could pick the ideal clients she wanted to work with only and not have to work with those that didn't interest her or bring her enjoyment from her accomplishments.
At the same time of her success, she found that her virtual assistant website was being bombarded with requests from aspiring and new virtual assistants wanting help or sending resumes to her. There was so much misinformation or just not enough information to help these people, and after a while, Heather could not keep up with the number of inquiries any longer.
Because she wanted to help others find the enjoyment of working from home while balancing a virtual assistant business with family, she started Secretaries on Demand in the summer of 2007. The business later evolved into the Virtual Assistant Resource, a help site offering Heather's famous free eCourse for people new to the virtual assistant industry or the concepts of virtual assistants. She also began coaching virtual assistants helping them get clients, retain clients, and set the parameters of their business so it didn't bleed into or ruin their family lives. Most of her clients say her honesty and her down-to-earth style of doing things make her very approachable and easy to work with when getting their businesses going.
In addition to her joy from helping others find success with virtual assistance, Heather loves gardening, hiking, druidry, dogs, archery, and spending time with her significant other and her 9-year old daughter. She is an active member of Girl Scouts of America as well as various Pit Bull Rescue & Rehabilitation groups and Beagle Rescue groups. She also supports the ASPCA, United Way, and St. Jude's Memorial Hospital.
