Does Visualizing Your Success Actually Get You There?
A while back, I picked up a couple of self-improvement books to help me in the change I wanted in certain areas of my life. Interestingly, they had one key message. Visualise your success. Visualization, the theory went, not only opened up your sub-conscious mind to the opportunities out there, it also fooled it into believing you were already everything you wanted to be thus boosting your confidence in actually getting there.

The Week That Was...
Last week was amazing. I spent 4 mesmerizing days in Amsterdam. Yes, I am talking about the beauty of the city with its history and architecture, with timeless canals and cobbled ‘straats’, with wild trams that stop for no one and even wilder bikers who own the roads and the sidewalks.

Gratitude Is More Than Simply Saying Thank You
There is a general sense that children today are unhappier and more ungrateful than a generation ago. On the face of it, it seems strange. Our children have more than we could have ever imagined possessing – more gadgets, more clothes, more experiences, more opportunities – and yet somehow it just does not seem enough.

A Soft Place to Call Home
Experiences can be painful. Such is life. When we were little, we ran to mommy and her kiss and cuddle fixed everything. Lying in her arms, there seemed not a worry in the world and the incident that had brought us running and howling was very soon a lonely cloud drifting in the far distance.

Listening In
(part 2 of A Soft Place to Call Home rn(http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/a-soft-place-to-call-home) “Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky Conscious breathing is my anchor” Thich Nhat Hanh In my last article, I wrote about the importance of being compassionate with ourselves at all times. But how many of us actually do it? How many of us actually remember to provide ourselves with the warm embrace of acceptance and the gentle voice of wisdom that recognizes our humanity – that of making mistakes and that capable of correcting them too.

An Inherent Fear
My oldest left for university last year. Although the mother hen in me feared that I would be nostalgic for long gone times and spend my nights shedding tears in silence, I was pleasantly surprised to see how well I actually coped. However, as time wore on, I began to notice that beneath the apparent strength, there was an underlying fear that emerged every so often. I would panic when she called at odd hours. I would get edgy if she did not call or text for a few days. And I would lose sleep when she was stressed, lonely, angry, or any other emotion on the negative spectrum.

Letting Go of Shame and Self Criticism
I was much older when I first recognized the voice of the inner critic. I’d known it for so long that I believed it to be my own. My later studies in psychology and working with wonderful women made me realize that we all carried this voice in our heads. Denying it or challenging it was often a waste of time. Listening to it gave it an attention it didn’t often deserve. What did work was understanding where it came from, because that gave us the power to move beyond its fears. The Early Beginningsr

Why Comparison May Be Destroying Us
Despite the freedom that’s come with claiming our rightful place in society, we women have become enslaved by a different form of captivity. We’ve become slaves of our own minds. And here’s the reason why. As we fought for all the roles that men had harbored, we got used to comparing ourselves to our male counterparts. This comparison denies the multiple strengths that we possess as women – strengths that are now being touted as highly effective for inspiring leadership. But more than that, it disconnects us from who we are and how we can show up authentically in the world.
