Time to Changer Consider when you really want something that was tantalising out of your reach. Perhaps as a child there was a special toy you wanted for your birthday, a new bicycle maybe; perhaps you wanted to learn to ride a bicycle. As an adult has there has been a time when you really wanted something expensive that was just outside of your budget – a designer handbag, a new car? How did you work to get those things? As a child you may have used all your parental pester power, perhaps you saved your pocket money and did extra chores to earn the reward.

The New Year is normally associated with new resolutions and optimistic thoughts of positive life changes. It is a time when we take stock of our lives and look to the past to see where we have some from and look to the future to see where we want to go. However as you will know sticking to New Year’s resolutions is not easy and requires continuing motivation and tenacity to succeed; something that seems to dry up quite quickly hence the need to start all over again the next year. So what happens? Why do we fail in our attempts to change our life so often before we really start?

Personal Acceptance What does acceptance mean to you – being resigned to something or finding peace within ourselves by ‘going with the flow’? When we accept something we take it at face value without question. Acceptance of others and our lives can be very difficult. We don’t like the way other people behave, we may not like the way we are, physically or mentally. The idea of acceptance being resignation to your lot seems to contradict a lot of what we try to achieve through self development and personal coaching.

What image or thoughts does the idea of peace bring up for your? First thoughts of peace are of quiet, calm serenity. For most of us with our modern busy lifestyles it may well be a rare thing. A nice relax in the bath, a pleasant walk on an spring day or a day out somewhere with a friend all contribute towards giving you some peace. Taking the concept of peace deeper makes us think of a time without strife, arguments or fighting. The ideal of people living together in harmony and showing respect and dignity towards each other also comes to mind.

The idea of being responsible often conjures up images of dull but sensible people, of commitment, ties to others and being boring, lacking spontaneity, being weighed down and generally other views around lack of freedom. For some the idea of responsibility rings alarm bells and sends them running, others feel it as a shackle that ties them down and some people just never seem to accpet it. To have responsibility according to the dictionary "is to be responsible", which is further defined as "liable to be called to account, morally accountable for actions".

Gratituder What is gratitude? Being grateful for what we have got? Giving thanks to others for something they have given us; be it material or not? Why bother? The cynical would say because if we don't say thank we will soon lose our friends and any help people give willingly so it is worth the effort for the payback. Is that the only benefit? It is true that good manners endear us to our fellow human beings. However gratitude has a much more beneficial effect on us. Saying Thank Your There are obvious times when we say thank you.
