The Tyranny of Perfection
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-shure/the-tyranny-of-perfection_b_149359.html Posted: December 10, 2008 A few weeks ago I had the privilege of hearing Jane Fonda speak to 700 psychotherapists at a conference sponsored by the Renfrew Center Foundation. This venue, filled with experts in the field of eating disorders, was a most fitting audience for Jane's talk on "The Tyranny of Perfection." Jane's family history was striking.

Yet Again The Media Sells Us Ridiculous Standards of Beauty
In the past week, the fashion industry and its promoter, women’s magazines, have yet again sold girls and women down the river. First, Marie Claire’s Austrlian division took the spotlight with its February cover that refrains from using photo shopping with its nude photo of former Miss Universe 2004, model Jennifer Hawkins. Then the New York Times reported “The Triumph of the Size 12s,” a story about “plus size model” Crystal Renn.

Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders: The Heart of the Matter
Edited by Margo Maine, William N. Davis, Jane Shure
This book is the first to address what really happens behind closed doors during eating disorders treatment, as most writing has only addressed theoretical approaches and behavioral strategies. The field has long needed a book that describes the heart of the matter: the therapeutic interventions and interactions that comprise life-changing treatment for this life-threatening disorder. In response to this need, the authors have created a book that reflects the individual therapeutic skills and the collective wisdom of senior clinicians, all ofrnwhom have years of experience treating anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder.
Intended to be a deeply thoughtful and instructive volume, Effectiver Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders: The Heart ofrnthe Matter demonstrates the depth, complexity, and impact of the therapeutic process. In particular, the book articulates and explores essential points of information, issues, insights and unresolved questions about eating disorders treatment. Effective Clinical Practice inrnthe Treatment of Eating Disorders describes and explicates important treatment issues and themes in a nuanced, highly contextualized and qualitative manner. The book offers a significant reference for both novice and seasoned therapists, and it includes specific information that will serve to inform and mentor future generations of eating disorders clinicians.
The Inside/Outside Self-Discovery Program for the Middle School Years:Strategies to Promote Emotional Health, Resilience, and Relationships
Written by Helene Feinberg-Walker, Sarah Barrett, & Jane Shure
Touca Ed.com | 888-386-8226 | Special introductory offer: $35.00The middle school years are the ideal time for young teens tornstrengthen their self-esteem and resilience so that they can resist the pull of drugs, alcohol, sex, and body-image obsessions.
This dynamic curriculum was designed to help these youth
develop skills to navigate the challenging terrain of early adolescence
by teaching about self-awareness, what feelings are and how to work
with them, strategies for constructive self-talk, methods for managing
stress and tension, the forces that drive social comparison and cause
insecurities, and media literacy (especially those messages pertaining
to body-image and dissatisfaction with oneself).
The Inside/Outside Self-Discovery Program promotes emotional health and resilience by helping young teens to:
- increase internal resources that fortify healthy development
- build skills for managing the ups and downs of peer relationships
- foster the ability to resist cultural pressures to be perfect
- develop supportive inner talk to counter self-criticism
Evaluative research suggests that participation in this program enhances the coping skills needed for resilience and self-acceptance. The Inside/Outside Self-Discovery Program is ideal for anyone working to empower middle school youth.
