“The greatest thing is, at any moment, to be willing to give up who we are in order to become all that we can be.“ Max De Pree Letting Go Like many people, I started 2010 with a list of goals for the year. Some of these goals related to my business and were being kept alive because they had not been achieved in 2009. Truthfully, I was dragging them forward and they were being kept alive with CPR – Constant Pressure & Resistance. They were all sensible goals – things I was told I 'should' do to make my business grow and be successful.

"Time is limited, so I better wake up every morning fresh and know that I have just one chance to live this particular day right, and to string my days together into a life of action, and purpose."? Lance Armstrong, 7-time winner of the Tour de France Living Your World Class Life Last month Vancouver hosted the winter olympics. It is said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If you don't plan to do things differently, no amount of goal setting will help you achieve what you haven't been achieving up to now. Something has to change. For many people, setting goals means adding things to already busy lives. If a cup is already full to the brim, there is no room to add more water. If you want to freshen up the water, some needs to be emptied out first. So it is with your life.

I recently heard a presentation by Jim Carroll, a Canadian futurist, made to a group of business people from the technology sector. He affirmed what we all know – that things are evolving at a rapid pace. For example: The volume of knowledge is doubling every 8 years. A person taking a science degree will find that within their first year of work about half of what they learned will be obsolete. In about 20 years, 65% of children who are now of pre-school age will will work in jobs that have not even been invented yet! What does this mean for every one of us?

I frequently encounter people who are on a quest to figure out their purpose in life. On a very fundamental level, your purpose in life is to breathe and everything else is a choice, including your purpose in life. Once you acknowledge that, other than breathing, everything in life is a choice, you can begin to fully appreciate the power of choice. Sometimes you may think that you have no choices, however, in reality, this is not so. Even in the most dire of situations you always have a choice. It could be to act, or not to act, which are both choices.

In today's fast-paced world of business and personal life we have a number of ways in which we can get and stay connected with each other. Through the wonders of technology we can connect across the globe instantaneously through satellite, e-mail, telephone and cell phones. We can precisely know the location of a person or vehicle anywhere in the world with the aid of a GPS system. We have PC's, laptops, Blackberries, palm pilots and other electronic devices that allow us to connect, schedule, read e-mail remotely and be as up-to-date as possible.

You hear how important it is to be 'motivated'. Have you ever wondered why many people set goals and do not reach them, and why so many New Year's resolutions go unfulfilled? The key is what lies behind the goals, the resolutions and the motivations. Motivation is about willpower and specific achievement. Motivation is mental and logical, and is usually exte ally driven, either by the expectations of others, by fears or by problems. For example, you may have sales quotas, or a bonus structure at work intended to motivate you to produce results.

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi “Being first” - now there is a provocative phrase. It can mean varied and different things, depending on your perspective. Being first can mean winning a contest of some kind, being victorious. It can mean putting yourself at the top of the list and ensuring that you look after your own needs first. Being first can mean getting away from the “to do” lists and activities and taking reflective, quiet time to nurture your spirit. After all, we are human beings, not human doings.

Whose Business Are We In? At some point in time, each of us encounters situations where you want to jump in and fix something in another person’s life, perhaps a family member, friend or co-worker. It may be a personal situation, a work problem, a financial situation, a conflict – the opportunities to jump in and “fix it” are vast and diverse. And our desire to help out comes from a very sincere, caring motive - most of the time.
