In Defense of Karate (or any other martial art) as a "Fighting Art"
One of my students came to me recently, conce ed because she read a number of posts online that slammed karate for being "a less effective form of fighting/self-defense." How crude. Now, I'm trying REALLY hard not to sound like an elitist karate snob here (Okay, I admit it, I am an elitist ...

How to get started
If you are in the Boston area, and are interested in martial arts or self-defense training, please contact our dojo by calling 617-230-1973 or visiting our website for additional information!
Before we tell you all about our classes, staff, schedule, and fees, we thought we would dedicate one page to explain some of the ideas behind all of the exercise, fun, and camaraderie that you’ll discover at our dojo!At Emerald Necklace Martial Arts, we embrace martial arts training as a way of life, and teaching effective self-defense techniques is only a part of what do. Our primary goal is to introduce our members to the philosophies that permeate the martial arts, and to show people how to apply these principles to their everyday lives — outside of our school, and in ways that have very little to do with blocking, kicking, and punching. This, we believe, is the ultimate form of self-defense!
During our classes on the mat, we teach and practice those things we want to see in the world — things like respect, compassion, gratitude, patience, integrity, discipline, kindness, and responsibility. To earn a Black Belt at our dojo, you'll need to do a lot more than kick high, break boards, or memorize patterns. You'll need to become an "Artist of Life" by learning about the following concepts and how they relate to self-defense:
-
Warrior Traditions, History, and Philosophy
-
Environmentalism and Conscious Consumption
-
Leadership, Teamwork, and Community Activism
-
Peace Education and Conflict Resolution Skills
-
Fitness, Wellness, and Healthy Living
-
