Married to the same girl for 43 years, Pastor Jerry L. Lewis is a retired Methodist pastor and missionary, a retired school teacher, and an author. His focus is on teaching people how to ask more effective questions. He observes that much of the time we are the biggest contributor to our problems, and the solutions we come up with are usually opposed to what God would probably prescribe. He wrote "What God Can't Do: Keys to Prayer Power" to help people understand that "better questions always get better answers, and that a good coach can help people more with effective questions than with wonderful sermons. The Value of a Promise
Sometimes the special touches that God provides are just what we need in the midst of a situation to let us know that He cares about us and is watching over our lives. It seemed like an easy request, so I said, "OK," without thinking. We had given each our sons a small rocking chair on their 2nd birthday. We have kept those small chairs for almost forty years, hauling them across the country and halfway back. Our oldest son decided to give his rocker to one of his daughters, and my wife asked me to get it down and repair it.

Outcome Driven Prayer vs. Performance Praying, Part1
Hi, I’m Pastor Jerry and I want to share with you a whole new world of prayer possibilities. You see, most of our praying is what I call “performance praying,” and the idea is pretty simple: if we get into the right position, say the right words, act holy enough, include enough passion, get enough people pleading, and persevere long enough, we can get God off his kiester and out onto the dance floor.

Bloodless Sacrifice; What Two Words Don't Go Together?
I couldn’t believe it. The discussion guide we use in Emmanuel UMC’s adult Sunday school class, which has been pretty good up to now, completely “whiffed” in its explanation of why God accepted Abel’s sacrifice but not Cain’s.

WHy Happiness and Joy are Opposites
Usually people use the word "Happiness" when they are really searching for "Joy." They don't realize the two words are opposites, and for the most part, mutually exclusive. I remember being the pastor between two hurting people and hearing, “He doesn’t make me happy any more,” or “I’m very unhappy with the way she has changed over the past year.”

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Jerry Lewis
From between my ears:
Don't ask God to write the answer across the sky; ask Him to place an "X" on the ground where your next footstep goes.
We almost never need the whole answer: Just the next step.
There is much more value in one small thing done than in many great things promised.
Faithfulness in small things leads to faithfulness in great things, and never the other way around.
Most of our answers lie within us, and a skilled encourager can draw them out with questions that embrace the heart.
