Health, obesity, work, addiction, relationships – life. Does it have to be so hard? Is it possible for life to be easier than this?
After being laid off three times, divorced, struggling with debt, illness, obesity and addiction, I began a quest for an easier way and to help others struggling with similar circumstances overcome adversity and thrive through change.
In my book, Does Change have to be so H.A.R.D.? I write, “Hard or easy, it’s how you think about it.” Through my years of experience as a psychiatric nurse and personal coach as well as my own hardships and triumphs, I discovered that there is an easier way to approach change.
People facing seismic changes in their life have the power to change things for the better but often hide behind a wall of fear, self-doubt and negative mental conditioning. In order to change something in your life – be it weight loss, overcome an addiction, improve a relationship, experience happiness at work – you must bring down that wall to release your power and take charge. Once you start believing in your ability to change, you can create powerful, positive habits that allow you to be fully who you are and enjoy your body, work and relationships.
In my book, I use the acronym H.A.R.D. to explain why change is so difficult: people find themselves enslaved by Habits, Attachments, Resistance and Discouragement. In the end, they often lose the fight. This is why 40-70% of marriages fail, 50-90% of people relapse from addictions and 95% of people who lose weight regain it and then some.
In the quest for an easier way, I present eight simple strategies for making a change without struggle or stress:
1. Commit to change.
2. Envision a better future.
3. Develop the characteristics you need to succeed.
4. Create an environment to support the change.
5. Take action.
6. Celebrate your success along the way.
7. Laugh and enjoy the journey.
8. Adopt empowering beliefs.
Follow this path to become a master of change – overcome the fear, let go of the past and enjoy this life experience. Change is not the enemy; fear is. Not changing is often very painful and can impact your health as well as your happiness and life satisfaction. It’s time to change how you think about change. Your life depends on it.
Today, I enjoy a great life with my husband, Lou, son Josh, stepso Jael and our five cats.

How Self-Esteem Issues Show Up
Most people experience self-doubt on a regular basis and I am not immune. I have spent entirely too much of my life trying to accept myself as I am. While easy for me to see how wonderful and special you are, it was a challenge for many years to see myself in the same light. It’s no wonder that my first book focuses on “self-discovery and acceptance.” And it’s no wonder that my journey led me into psychiatric nursing and success coaching not only to work on my own personal development, but to assist others in their personal leadership development as well.

What If YOU Were Front Page News? Four Steps to Freedom from Secrets
“You cannot look at someone’s exterior and know what’s going on inside.” This quote from the book The Journey Called YOU is a very profound statement because what it means is that looks can be very deceiving; someone who seems to have it all together may in fact be living a life of lies.

Powerful Communication: Apology Do’s and Don’ts
Do you apologize for anything and everything? Do you apologize for things that are completely out of your control? How about apologizing for other people’s behavior? Do you tend to apologize just to see if the other person will apologize? An apology can be a very cathartic act. It can mend fences and build bridges. It is an act of a true leader when you are able to admit a wrong or mistake. An apology done well is powerful. For this reason, making an apology should be taken very seriously.

Six Steps to Managing a Negative Work Environment
Does your work environment bring out the best in you or the worst? When you leave work, do you feel drained, exhausted and even angry? Do you generally feel like you are dodging bullets all day? Managing Your Emotions after a Layoff
Change is constant. We just aren’t always aware nor do we pay attention to every change that we make through the course of a day. But when big changes occur, like a layoff or termination of employment, we stand up and take notice. We have to!

Let Go of Your Need to Be Right
Have you ever had an argument? It’s a silly question, for sure. Everyone has. You know, in that moment, when you’re so sure that you’re right, when you just wish the other person would hear you - your version of reality, that is, your right way of looking at the world. If they would only understand the world the way you do, everything would be fine! But then, they are thinking the same thing in that moment, believing you should listen to them. Their way, after all, is the right way, the only way.

Five Steps Toward Eliminating Overwhelm
Overwhelmed? It happens to the best of us at times. Some people live in a constant state of overwhelm. Knowing yourself, being aware of your abilities, and creating an environment that nurtures your success can help to alleviate or minimize overwhelm. You also must learn to stand up for yourself and create good boundaries with your time and your workload. This can be quite difficult for people who enjoy pleasing others, who seek reassurance and approval from others, or who have an inner barometer that just doesn’t know when to say “no.” Overwhelm means you need to simplify.

Winning the Battle in Your Mind
“When I try to do the work, to approach a task or push through my procrastination, a battle ensues in my mind. I wind up feeling so intimidated that I take a seat and let the battle go on. I get so distracted that I’m paralyzed and I don’t get done whatever I wanted to do. It’s limiting – it limits my ability to set goals and to dream of new things in my life. It tears me down and I feel like I have no control – that my life is out of my control.

Leadership Strategies: A Productivity Model
In 2005, as president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the International Coach Federation, I held a meeting with the Board of Directors because in some areas we seemed to be hitting snags in accomplishing our objectives. While people were working hard and committed to achieving our goals, we were off base with some of our efforts. People needed to be focused and reoriented so I designed an outline for understanding productivity in a more strategic manner. When operating as part of a high level team, it’s essential that all parties are on the same page and operating in harmony.
