Kathleen Notman Quick Facts

Kathleen Notman was born in 1929 in Leicester, England. She attended Boston High School for Girls, Boston, Lincolnshire and left at the age of 16. She worked as a receptionist in hotels around England until the age of 20 when she married a Royal Air Force navigator and accompanied him to Singapore. From there they went back to England and later moved to New Zealand where they now live.

Notman was born into a flamboyant family some of whom were artists. When her children were in their teenage years, she became interested in photography and ultimately made a career of combining photography and painting.

Her major work is a collection of portraits, “20th Century Woman”. She portrayed herself as 35 different women. It was through creating this collection that she became interested in emotion and went on to record the speech, “The Role of Emotion in the Creation of Art”.
