As a career coach and researcher of working women's work-life issues, I've embarked on a national research study on Women Succeeding Abundantly, in order to learn first-hand the essential ingredients in thinking, beliefs, choices, and behaviors that create and maintai "knock-your-socks-off success" in women. I'm learning from women who have the courage to raise their hands today and say, "Yes! I feel tremendously successful on my terms, and I have found the way to live life joyfully and with great gusto." Why is this topic important?

What are the easiest ways to spot an ineffective career coach who won’t be helpful in moving you forward? This week I heard from a lovely woman in another state who shared with me a story about a career coach she hired this year. This coach, in the end, was of no help at all. I have to say, if I’ve heard this once, I’ve heard it one hundred times.

Running a coaching and consulting company dedicated to helping women achieve breakthrough in their lives and work, I meet thousands of folks each year who want to reinvent, many of whom are considering launching a coaching or consulting practice, or other small business of their own. They long to transition into coaching for solid reasons, and many come with great, top-level experience.

Part I: What to Release I’ve had a long, bumpy journey on the road to finding my true niche as a professional. From years of inauthentic (and unappealing) corporate work, to becoming a psychotherapist and coach yearning to find my true “sweet spot,” my path has been fraught with blocks and fears about “naming and claiming” who I am as a professional in this world. Finally, I can say I’ve discovered exactly what I love to do and for whom, at least for the present. In overcoming many challenges in finding my true niche, I am now focused on helping others do the same.

Since my book published this Fall, I've been inundated by activity around launching it, publicizing it, and speaking about it. I enjoy much of this activity, as it involves marketing and promotion, which I'm comfortable with (it was my professional specialization in my corporate life, and also it fits my "socializer" personality). I also believe in the book's messages, so it's a joy to speak about it.

A wake-up call is a resounding signal received that change is necessary in your life. Often we get this type of call when a crisis or deeply challenging situation has emerged. Clients ask me, "What is crisis in our lives?

As a coach and a psychotherapist, I’ve worked with hundreds of people each year who are going through dramatic change of some kind or another, and are in need of support from their families, friends, colleagues and others. We often discuss what healthy support is, and how it feels when we receive support that gives us the strength and confidence to persevere. What does helpful support look like? From my perspective, positive support shows up in many ways, and is expressed verbally and non-verbally, through language, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior.

Are you a professional woman longing for a radical change? You are not alone. According to my research—a yearlong national study in partnership with the Esteemed Womanr Foundation—seven out of 10 women today, particularly those in their middle years, say they are facing a major turning point in their professional lives. After devoting years to building successful careers, they feel that their professional lives and identities no longer work.

Professional women have made tremendous strides in terms of drawing on our strengths, abilities, and confidence in the workplace in recent years, but it’s clear that we have a long way to go before we are using our female power with self-assurance and ease. Based on my national in-depth research study Women Overcoming Crisis: Finding New Meaning in Life and Work, and my work with hundreds of professional women each year, I have found that even high-level, high-achieving professional women report battling insecurity and discomfort in using their voices to lead powerfully and say “no” o

There are so many people today in dramatic career and life transition, and also thousands of coaches and consultants offering help. I’ve discovered, however, that recommending simple, straightforward tactics and strategies does not work unless there has been a true breakthrough in the individual’s thinking and behavior that allows them to become unstuck, and to embrace new possibilities where constraints and limitations were seen before. What do you need to do to create your own breakthrough, and make your goals and visions in life and work a reality? Here are 6 essential steps to

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Kathy Caprino

From Kathy's book Breakdown, Breakthrough (www.breakdownbreakthrough.com):

  • “Follow the thing that you love more than yourself, the thing that makes you more than your human body and your human frailties. Something has to make you want you to be bigger than you are. Find out what that is, what you were marked for, let go of your fears, worries and your ego, and just do it. Help will come to you when you do.

  • Money is energy that flows when you flow. Connect with what you long to do, balance that with what you need to, and let money be a helper, supporter, and respected friend. Clear away beliefs and actions that keep you angry, resistant, and unsupported. It’s up to you to do this, and you can.

  • You are here now to support and assert the positive and powerful person you are and what you believe. Suppression is a lesson from your life that is waiting to be healed and overcome.

  • You are a multi-faceted individual. Your life is an intricate mosaic, with many patterns, colors, and dimensions that enhance each other. Avoid over-identification with any one role, function, or aspect of yourself, and remember how richly varied you are.
  • You are meant to listen to the messages of your body, follow your heart, and heed your intuition, not deny them. Healing will come when you do.
