Heat comes in many forms, not just the weather. It can represent struggle, inflammation and illness (particularly cancer). Visualize a large ice cube at the top of your head melting downward and washing away all tension, stress, pain and struggle as the coolness flows to your toes. Use this visualization every hour for one to three minutes today and notice what happens to your energy and perceptions. Often times, the conscious choice to shift our energetic states creates deeper states of peacefulness and acceptance in our lives.

This week, I took my three-years-old niece to the Zilker Botanical gardens for some relaxing play amid koi ponds filled with guppies. We walked under bamboo groves, swaying in hot summer breezes and delighted at feeding turtles at Mozart’s cafe as river waves splashed onto the deck unexpectedly. Ahh! Summer bliss. The lack of self consciousness and the authenticity of just being, trusting and engaging life deeply, is amazing in young children.

Blue mountain irises danced in the wind on summer days at my cozy cottage in the Santa Cruz mountains. What a treat each day to be greeted by their gentle beauty. Yet, here in the parched landscape of central Texas, beauty also unfolds each day in more subtle ways. A small cricket makes its way towards that elusive source of water, the collection pot holding the overflow of moisture from the air conditioner overflow valve. The cricket pauses and sings for a moment. That sound, almost imperceptible, is as soothing and sweet as the energy of the blue iris.

Sometimes the waves of life come quickly and overwhelm, yet if you take a deep breath, it’s amazing what strength exists in the spaces between the rising wave and its crash upon the shore.

Sunsets are a wonderful opportunity to linger over all the moments in your day for which you are grateful, and prepare to embrace the yinness (softness, darkness) of the night. If you usually exercise in the morning, try switching to the evening time to perform Chinese yoga (qi gong), tai chi or other forms of energy healing exercises. As you gaze upon the setting sun, inhale slowly and raise the arms slowly to the sides with palms up as you reach above the head to grab an imaginary ball of warm, sunset energy.

Chinese yoga or qi gong (pronounced chi kung), is a powerful way to release the dampness and heat that summer time brings. Dampness and heat are states that can lead to health issues such as excessive weight, chronic fatigue, aggravation of inflammatory conditions, depression, anxiety, and digestive challenges. What causes dampness and heat? Cold and iced beverages stagnates the energy of the spleen, creating dampness.

Often times, the stress of life and exposure to toxins in the environment can stress our lymphatic system. In Chinese medicine, the lymphatic is most closely associated with the triple heaters or triple burners, which can be thought of as an irrigation system of energy that disperses qi to the inte al organs. When this irrigation system is clear and free flowing, disease does not exist. When the triple heaters are obstructed, we see challenges manifesting as swollen lymph glands, low energy, and low immunity.
