I had a client say something very interesting to me last week…she suggested that because I was a mental health counselor, I, therefore, have minimal issues or challenges in my life. Ha!

Here’s something everyone can relate to: Your Car. That wonderful and amazing piece of technology that takes you from one place to another… usually without any difficulty. And what is one big element the car relies on to get you there? The tires…those round rubber donuts which “usually” create no problems. Let’s talk about your tires…stick with me here… it’ll all start to make sense…I promise!

I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine: Jzumbula Kittae la Kunta. I call her “Kunta” and she’s a cat. Cats are interesting creatures and Kunta has taught me a number of lessons I wanted to pass on to you. Nine of them, in fact…fitting since cats allegedly have 9 lives. I think Kunta had closer to 49 lives. Lesson #1: Ask for what you want. Kunta showed up outside my front window about 15 years ago. She looked in and meowed several times.

1) Create a life vision and visit it daily What I mean by a life vision is this: Where are you going? Where are you going in life? And what are you doing all this for? What’s the target? Many people don’t have this target or vision in their lives. They’re just in motion. They don’t really know where they’re going. That’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world, but oftentimes what happens to people who don’t have a destination or a target, is that they burn out. They don’t have any purpose for doing what they’re doing.

I have a confession. I’m a Photoshop® wannabe. In case you don’t know it, Photoshop® is the premier software program for digital photography. It has more features to tweak, enhance, and distort photographic images than you can imagine. As much as I’d like to master this program, truth be known, I’m still very much a beginner. However, I’ve taken some Photoshop® classes and my instructor used little sayings to help his students remember certain Photoshop® tricks and applications.

Question: Do you suffer from already always living? The primary symptom is projecting the past onto the future. It’s assuming what has already happened to you before, will always happen again. So as a result, you stay stuck in repetitive patterns, and you live your life like a broken record, and backwards. You have simply forgotten the future and are predicting the past. Am I describing you? According to legend, Merlin the Magician lived from the future in the present, and that was his magic. He knew what was going to happen because he had already been there.

When I was about 12, I watched one of the old Clint Eastwood westerns where he plays the role of the hardened cowboy: Very little emotional expression, very few words, a tough-as-nails attitude, an occasional fight, some woman to fall in love with him and then, at the end, he leaves town to ride off and disappear into the horizon of solitude. I thought this was what real men were like and, without truly realizing it, I subconsciously took on this image.

Have you ever noticed that every successful person has a team with whom they surround themselves? For example, the head coach of any sports team has countless assistants and trainers. Every CEO has a board of directors. Of course, the President has his cabinet, as well as numerous other advisors and consultants. And what about you? Who is in your cabinet? Who are your assistant coaches? And who is on your board of directors? Do you have anybody? One big reason people have difficulty accomplishing their goals is they try to do all the work on their own.

What are my core values? What's most important? The most important thing about the most important thing is to keep the most important thing the most important thing. I hope by now you are beginning to realize the importance of knowing what you want in your life, and you're beginning to take the steps to figure it all out. But how do you decide when to do what and for how long? You can start by creating a values and priorities oriented life. It may sound simple, but for many people it's quite challenging. How big can your life be? What I'm asking is: How big is the space you live your life in? What restricts you from growing as big as possible? Is there any chance you've already outgrown your old life? Just how big is your life, and how big can it be? As you're pondering those questions, think about this in another way: Just how bright can your inner light shine? That inner light of yours was given to you to brighten up the world.

Life is a river: You cannot push it to make it go any faster, nor can you turn around and stop it. You may, however, choose to learn how to kayak and in doing so you'll discover kayaking to be an imperfect process as you zig-zag your way down this river of Life. Rapids, currents and still pools will all provide you with an endless variety of opportunities to grow and develop your perfectly imperfect process of Life kayaking. You may also want to pay close attention to waterfalls and make a conscious decision to portage at these times.
