I think we think too much. Don’t get me wrong, I think the mind is an amazing tool to help us live and survive in this world, but sometimes it feels like my incredible thinking machine has a life of its own! When I start thinking, thoughts seem to morph from one thought to another. “I need to mow the lawn” and suddenly the color green flashes before me. Now I’m thinking of “money” which leads to thoughts of retirement. Then I think, “who will care for me?” transforms to, “I wonder what it will be like to die alone?”

Over the years I’ve managed by wearing contact lenses as they work well for near-sighted people. But lately, I’ve been having issues with my eyes. Because of extreme myopia, the retinas get stretched to the point where my vision becomes severely distorted.

As we prepare for the American Thanksgiving, Christmas and Chanukah, my friends talk of plans to go home to be with their families for the holidays. What’s surprising to me, is that the tone in their voice isn’t one of excitement or anticipation, but more of dread and obligation. Looking Within Because we share similar psychological and emotional makeups, our family members know exactly what buttons to push to activate those dreaded holiday situations.

The lights of the season remind us of the warmth of friends and family gatherings. For those who can't make it home or may be spending the holiday alone, the seasonal celebrations can amplify feelings of loneliness. If you feel lonely, know that it's okay. Try going into it and really feel the loneliness. Like boredom, anger or jealousy, you'll discover that it's just another feeling. Accept the loneliness as much as you can and allow the sensations in your body to arise without tensing against them. Notice and Observe
