Interviewing is one of the most stressful activities imaginable for most people. One of my clients actually moved to mainland China because she hates interviewing so much that she has a habit of taking the first job offered to her. She became a client after realising how much she hated living in China and that she needed help feeling more confident with interviewing skills. Most people don’t feel confident because they are not adequately prepared. Here are some easy tips to help you become more prepared and to nail every interview you go to. 1. Research the company

I’m a Green Bay Packers fan, so I’m very very happy this week (for those of you who don’t follow American Football, they just won the Super Bowl). Win or lose, I’m a proud Packers fan, or a Cheesehead as we are sometimes called. I grew up in Wisconsin, my Dad grew up 30 minutes out of Green Bay. I was called “Packer” before I was born and they knew what to name me. And, some of my Dad’s ashes were spread over the 50 yard line at Lambeau Field, where the Packers play, when he passed away in 1999. So I’m a proud Packers fan.

A job is never just a job. Think about the first question you ask when you meet someone: ‘what do you do?’. That’s because what we ‘do’ is, in many cases also who we ‘are’: our identity, self-worth and satisfaction are inextricably tied to our career. And it’s no wonder - we spend a lot of our lives at work! So, the people we work with, the mood of the workplace, the outcomes of our labour: all these things contribute to how we feel about our career, ourselves and our lives.

I introduced the third step in the Critical Path to a Great Career!, “Mastering Your Skills”, in my last article. As I mentioned, these skills actually fall into 3 different categories; Career Management Skills (what the Critical Path is all about), Job Search Skills (taking control of your job search not not relying exclusively on recruiters) and the 4 Critical, Non-Technical skills essential for every business person regardless of function.

I got it wrong. For 15 years I got it wrong. During that time as a recruiter I saw many candidates walk into my office with a common complaint. “I’m just not happy,” they would tell me. “I’ve lost my passion (assuming they ever had it) for what I’m doing and I need to find another job.”

What is a killer resume? It's a resume that gets read and gets you an interview. Period. It’s not the flashiest, fanciest, most unusual or best designed resume. What gets you that interview? The ability to concisely, articulately and succinctly demonstrate that you can solve the hiring manager’s problem or add value to the company.

Using robust and multiple job search strategies will make all the difference in how long you look for a new job, especially if you are unemployed. The third step in the Critical Path to a Great Career is “Mastering Your Skills”. Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Kim Seeling Smith

Most people spend more time planning their vacations than their careers. In the 15 years that I worked as a Recruiter I saw many capable and talented people seemingly effortlessly reach their professional goals. Unfortunately I've seen many more equally capable and talented people plateau or senselessly slide backwards as they start to near them.

I got curious. What was the difference between these two groups of people? Was it ability? Skills? Education? Luck? Political savvy? The answer was none of those.

After working with literally thousands of people and helping to manage hundreds of careers I determined that what makes the difference between career fulfillment and profesional oblivion is actually 4 key factors. What I call the 4 Steps on the Critical Path to a Great Career.

I'm now passionate about teaching people my 4 steps so they can get on their own critical path and achieve absolutely everything they want to achieve professionally, which will help them to achieve their personal goals as well.

I also work with companies to help them create an environtment that will attract and retain critical people.

So, please check out my articles and products. I also have lots of free tools on my website, www.MyCriticalPath.com.

Come along with me on this journey and find out how you can get on your Critical Path.
