That one chapter eventually led to my fourth book, Every Generation Needs a New Revolution. She created a presentation on the same subject, which became a workshop, and the workshop has evolved into a workshop, Bickering-Backbiting-Clashing-Colliding - Just another Day at the Office!
As a working caregiver for over ten years, I had hands-on experience dealing with the many issues of the aging of America. Sharing my mother’s journey toward the end of her life, I learned about the challenges in finding products and services to make Mama's life easier, and how to navigate the maze through the geriatric healthcare system. This led to my second book, A Caregiver’s Journey, You Are Not Alone.
As a dynamic no-nonsense speaker, I get to the heart of the matter, using humor and my natural ability to relate to my audience. My presentations, workshops and seminars are high energy, high content, and high quality. I am comfortable with my audience and communicate my message(s) with ease. Contact me for if you need an inspirational speaker for your next seminar or conference.

Caregivers – Choosing the Right Living Options for Our Parent(s)
There comes a time when each one of us must admit that, no matter how hard we try, we can no longer do it all. That is especially important when it comes to the subject of caring for our elderly parents. Let's consider a hypothetical situation of Carol who is divorced, her children and siblings all live out of state. At the first indication that her mother could no longer live on her own, Carol moved Mom into her home and has been her sole caregiver for six years. Carol recently had a heart attack brought on by stress and the all-too-common failure to care for herself.

The Gift of Security - the Greatest Gift of All
What are you giving for the holidays? You may be making lists, shopping like crazy, or trying your hand at things home made this year. I'd like to offer another choice. The very sudden passing of the husband of a dear friend has caused me to go back to the roots of my business. The subject of planning for the unexpected and for the inevitable. This was a gentleman in perfect health, they thought they had many more years together before old age and illness set in.

Generational (Mis)communications - Things You Never Say to an Older Person
If you are a young Gen Y working in a multigenerational office, do you know what to and what not to say to your Boomer colleague? First of all, don't ever, ever tell them you are too young to know any Bruce Springsteen songs. Big mistake. Communicating across generations is challenging, at best. But it can be accomplished with a bit of training, some patience and a whole lot of common sense. Below are three comments you should never say to an older colleague.

Keeping Them Safe or Being Over Protective?
Have you heard the expression, "helicopter parents?" Those are the (usually) young parents of small children who are obsessive about keeping in touch with those kids 24/7. They are the parents who buy 6 year olds cell phones so they can be connected at all times. They are the parents who won't let their kids be kids. Now I'm not saying we shouldn't keep our children safe, but aren't we overdoing it a bit? After all, when I was growing up, getting a bump on the head, a scratch on the arm, or even a black eye from the occasional altercation, was part of being a kid.

Just Another Sales Pitch? You Decide. . .
An article I recently read about the hotel reservations business caused me to think about how we communicate. The article talked about a "new" service that offered a really great rate for a hotel room on the Internet. However, in order to get that really great rate, you had to pick up the phone, call the number provided and talk to a real person who just might have an even better deal for you. My question is, in today's world of electronic communication, why would any business who wishes to establish customer loyalty impose this painful process on a potential customer?

The Big Six O…hhhhh – Boomers Heading Toward "Senior" Status?
Now that the Boomers are reaching "elder" status and qualify for those dreadful "senior" discounts, what will happen to their upbeat, youthful approach to life? Will anything change? According to Robert Schwalbe, author of Sexy, Sixty and Successful: A Guide for the Aging Male Baby Boomer, hitting 60 and commencing the seventh decade of life is difficult because men confront the undeniable fact that their bodies are changing -- usually sagging. Hot young women aren't even giving them a first look, much less a second look.

Positive and Negative Language
When I was growing up, a senior was someone in their last year of high school or college. We would never have dreamed of calling our elders "seniors." It just wasn't appropriate. Over the years, however, the word "senior" has become synonymous with "elder" (usually meaning anyone over the age of 55). Well, folks, I'm over 55 and I really resent the negative images that come with the current usage of that word. No, I'm not ready for a retirement home. No, I don't want to move into a gated 55+ community where the only sign of life is the occasional car on the street.

Boomers Accept Assisted Living Communities? Not Likely . . .
It seems that lately there's another assisted living community being built on just about every empty lot in town. What does this mean to the future? For the immediate future, it's great. We Boomers who have no time, no desire, no call to welcome our elder parents into our own homes have someplace to put Mom and/or Dad as they need more and more assistance. But in the back of our minds, aren't we really thinking, "Gee, Mom and Dad are going to love it here. It has all the amenities they could ask for. But there's no way in h&%# I'm ever going to live here!" Now be honest.

Educating Our Young
At a recent meeting of the Future Business Leaders of America Advisory Council, I heard some interesting, or should I say, disturbing comments. At least they were to me. We were discussing the need for a new program in high school education titled "Business Operations Support and Assistant Services. This program focused specifically on office support staff (or, using their words, telephone operator, order clerks, file clerks and receptionists). Now I ask you, when did you last hear of a job title Telephone Operator?

The Family Caregiver
With every passing day, the role of the family caregiver increases in importance. Why? Because, as our elder loved ones reach the point they are no longer able to live safely, prepare nutritional meals, maintain the household and themselves, adult children gradually begin to assume more and more responsibility for their wellbeing. With that added responsibility comes additional stress. There are the self-imposed guilt trips. How can I focus on my spouse, my children and my career when I need to spend time with Mom and/or Dad in their time of need?

As Good As It Gets?
There have been several recent articles about the Gen Ys and Millennials, and how they don't believe their lives will be better than that of their parents. Yet since time began, it's been the goal of parents to provide a better life for their children than they had. My question is, how much ...

It Won't Happen to Me!
In a former life, I once sold insurance. More specifically, long term care insurance. The reason/excuse/objectio I heard from nearly everyone became a real sore spot with me. That's why I no longer sell insurance. What was that excuse? "It won't happen to me." Well, folks, the reality is that ...
