Why do Complementary and Alte ative approaches to Health Care Work?

Mind/body approaches to health work because they address not only the physical symptoms of a client's condition, but also the whole range of attitudes and behaviors surrounding the condition. They also recognize and deal with cycles of stress, anxiety, physical tension, symptoms and disease.

Client care can be greatly enhanced by incorporating complementary therapies of biofield medicine, such as Reiki, into the behavioral approaches, such as biofeedback, support groups, psychotherapy, etc., as well as into the traditional medical approaches of drug and physical therapy.

These complementary therapies work by encouraging clients to participate more fully in their treatment plans, by decreasing stress and pain levels, by improving overall mental/emotional states and often result in a lowered need for pain medication. They give clients tools to use on their own throughout the day, thus empowering them to become more independent, enhancing not only their quality of life, but also that of their families or caretakers.
