Dr Michael Petty is an author, researcher and educator. Michael was a faculty member of the Centre for Educational Research at the University of New South Wales. He left the academy in 1988 to set up a public research company specializing in multivariate sensory analysis and political research. At university Michael taught and did research in the fields of social psychology and applied multivariate statistics.

Over thirty years ago Michael was lead author of Michael F. Petty; Cecil J. Field (1980) Fluctuations in Mental Test Scores Educational Research, Volume 22, Issue 3 June 1980, pages 198 – 202. This was probably the first research to show that IQ scores in teenagers change over time. Until then it was believed that IQ was stable over the life span. This seminal article is cited in international psychology textbooks.

Michael’s latest book, IQ Unlimited, shows that almost everyone, including you, has a very powerful brain that can think far better than any computer and that can generate a high IQ. IQ Unlimited shows you how to excel in school, college or university.

Henry Ford said: "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right."

The SAT is such a shockingly poor predictor of performance in college that some colleges have abandoned the SAT and universities like the University of Califo ia are considering abandoning the SAT. – Michael Petty, IQ Unlimited

The IQ way of thinking:

  1. 1. You are born with a give IQ.
  2. 2. IQ is invariant; nothing can change your IQ.
  3. 3. IQ and college admissions tests can tell if you are one of the smart ones or not, and
  4. 4. IQ largely determines if we win or lose in the game of life.

All of these assumptions are false! - Michael Petty, IQ Unlimited

Your brain is a powerful force and its power can be greatly increased through brainwave entrainment.

Creativityr We usually associate creativity with the arts, with painting, sculpture, drama and literature but creativity is one of the most important forces in business. As Harvey Firestone said: "Capital isn't so important in business. Experience isn't so important. You can get both these things. What is important is ideas. If you have ideas, you have the main asset you need, and there isn't any limit to what you can do with your business and your life."r

IQ Can Be Improved Significantly – Gosh We Knew That In 1980 The Guardian (UK) reports the findings of a study carried out by Sue Ramsden of University College London of teenage IQ. The study was supervised by Prof Cathy Price. The Guardian reports rather breathlessly that “individual IQ scores rose or fell by as many as 21 points, a substantial difference – enough to take a person of "average" intelligence to "gifted" status, or vice versa”.

The IQ Myth The following item is taken from an IQ test. Two of the following numbers add up to 17: 6 – 13 – 2 – 12 – 7 – 14 True False Nobody is born with the knowledge to answer this item. We cannot answer this item without first learning numbers and simple arithmetic. Contrary to the IQ myth that is so pervasive in society, IQ is not innate. IQ must be learned.

BRAINWAVE ENTRAINMENT Brainwaves are a measure of the electrical activity of our brains. Thinking occurs when the cells in our brains exchange electrical and chemical signals. Brainwave activity indicates what is going on in the brain. The following table shows the common frequencies that we experience daily. Your Brain is Plasticr Neuroplasticity is the hot new topic in neuroscience. Many recent studies using the new MRI scanners have shown that the human brain is plastic, that it reacts to new stimuli by building new neural pathways. A good way to think of plasticity is to consider modeling clay. When a coin is pressed into the clay it leaves an imprint. When a thought occurs in a human brain it also leaves an imprint. After a while a barrage of similar thoughts leaves a lasting imprint.r

The Learning Styles Myth Subliminal learning is only one popular aid to learning that is a waste of time and money because it does not work. Unfortunately education and learning are beset with fads, many based on inadequate research. These educational fads pop up like mushrooms after rain; one such fad is learning styles. Learning styles are supposedly the different approaches that different people have to learning. The idea of individual learning styles originated in the 1970s, it has gained in credence since then.

Project Blue Brain IBM Project Blue Brain is a supercomputer designed to emulate the mammalian brain. It is the size of four refrigerators. Blue Brain can handle over 20 trillion operations a second. Does Blue Brain sound impressive? It is. By the end of 2007 Blue Brain had simulated one column of the neocortex of a rat with 10,000 neurons and 30 million synapses. Blue Brain still has a way to go before it even comes close to the full power of a rat brain. And the human brain is not only very much more powerful tha Blue Brain it is also very much more efficient tha Blue Brain.

The Subconscious Mind Emotional intelligence is located in the seat of our emotions, the subconscious or unconscious mind. From a psychological point of view it is best called the unconscious. It is our unconscious that governs our lives. The unconscious is the primitive mind that developed early in human evolution. Sigmund Freud called it the id: “It is the dark, inaccessible part of our personality, …. and most of this is of a negative character …. We … call it a chaos, a cauldron full of seething excitations...” Stephen King referred to it as the ‘lizard brain’.

Why do Asians Excel in School? Asians are extraordinarily successful in school. They are successful in America and in Australia, both immigrant nations, and in their home countries. While writing this I came across an article by Nicholas Kristof, a columnist in the New York Times. Kristof asked in a 2006 column: Why is Xuan-Trang Ho so perfect? Trang came to the United States in 1994 as an 11-year-old Vietnamese girl who spoke no English. Her parents, neither having more than a high school education, settled in Nebraska and found jobs as manual laborers.

How To Study And Improve Learning The cognitive techniques described below provide a study plan based on evidence, not myth. Follow this plan and you will improve your study skills, increase your memory and perform better in school and university. 1. Study In Multiple Locations. The brain makes associations between what it is studying and the background sensations it has at the time of study. Study at home, in the library, at school. Multiple associations give more neural scaffolding and this boosts memory.
