There seems to be a gym on just about every corner nowadays. So, how do you tell if a particular fitness center is right for you? For most people, the first consideration should be a convenient location. The facility should be close to where you live, work or visit regularly. Most people lead busy lives. Having to spend an extra 30 or 40 minutes going to and from the gym often ends up becoming an excuse to skip workouts when time gets tight.

I'm the first person to preach about getting the most out of your exercise time. In most instances, I prefer total body strength workouts and I believe in performing cardio intervals rather than slow, steady state cardio. If you are not an experienced and knowledgeable exerciser, I advocate hiring a good fitness coach to teach you proper exercise form and to get you started on a balanced strength training routine. All that being said, the bottom line is to start. Improve your nutrition and get moving.

Many people still think of personal training as an ongoing extravagance for celebrities and high powered CEO's. However, there are very few individuals who could not benefit from at least a few sessions with a professional, and more and more people are realizing the value of such an investment. If you're a novice exerciser, it's obvious why it would make sense to hire a personal trainer. Getting set up on the right program and learning proper technique will lower your risk of injury and help you get better results.

There's a lot of buzz lately about fitness boot camps and you may be wondering if joining one would be the right choice for you. There are many good reasons to check out boot camp training and here are a few... * Motivation. Exercising in a group is more fun and more motivating. It's human nature; you push yourself harder when everyone else is pushing themselves, too.

If you’ve ever started an exercise program and were frustrated by poor results, here are a few tips to make your workouts more productive. 1. Your results will be in proportion to your exercise intensity. You do not have to spend hours exercising. In fact, if you can, you're not working hard enough. Your weights are too light while lifting, your speed is too slow while doing cardio or both. Don't try to kill yourself the first day but you will need to challenge your body to get fat loss results.

You see it all the time- fitness centers around the country packed with people spending hours on the cardio equipment in an attempt to lose weight. Guess what? If you really want to get results, stay out of the "fat burning zone". Actually, my article title is rather misleading because the "fat burning zone" is not really a myth. It is, however, a gross oversimplification of how our bodies function and exercising at that intensity level will not produce optimum fat loss results.

It happened again! Even though I own a women's fitness center, I also train men. Often, it's husbands or significant others of members or clients. Two members and I were discussing how one of their husbands had recently met with me to learn a strength training program he could do at home. I asked the other member if her husband did any weight training and she replied that he didn't need to because "he has two hollow legs". Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhh! That's the sound of my head exploding. Just kidding...sort of.
