Laughing at Workplace Stress
Hard work has a future payoff. Procrastination pays off NOW! The idea of using humor to enhance business, to increase creativity, to improve relationships, to minimize stress and to develop client attract-ability is not a new one. It’s been around for over twenty-five years. A 1985 survey by the staffing firm, Robert Haft International, concluded that only 15% of employees are fired because of incompetence. The remaining 85% are let go because of lack of people or social skills. They just plain do not get along with others.

Rewards of Resilience

Now on top of the deadlines, we worry about salary freezes and layoffs. Challenges don’t go away; they only vary with different economic times. Many of us think that if we didn’t have hardship, we would be truly happy. Not so. Our lives are meant to be rewarding, happy, meaningful and challenging. Work often provides the arena to face adversity.

Acknowledgement Earns Workplace Engagement
We all crave to be seen, heard and acknowledged. Whether I say that to individuals, groups or large audiences, heads nod in the affirmative. When I first began working in a counseling agency, I was thrilled with the supervision. My manager smiled, nodded and listened as I worked out my problems through non-stop, extroverted talking. As I exited from his office, I would turn, thank him for his time and he would respond with a generous laugh and a big “You’re most welcome.” I left notes of appreciation on his desk and the occasional homemade muffin.

The Skinny on Resilience

Your life is meant to be rewarding, happy, meaningful and challenging. A meaningful life isn’t just handed to you all at once. It comes as you develop resilience. Be In Integrity: It’s about Being Honest with Yourself
Have you ever tucked a hotel towel in your suitcase? Tut, tut! It’s not an uncommon act. Regularly, we hear reports of millions of dollars worth of company property stolen by employees. Little violations happen very day like disappearing packages of paper, boxes of paper clips, file folders, and the occasional stapler and hole punch. Then there are the major breaches of public trust. Sherron Watkins was applauded on the cover of Time for whistle-blowing Enron’s big scam.

What is Right aboutYou?
“What is right about you?” is a basic resiliency strengthening question. What is it you believe about you? Do you believe that you are basically lovable and capable? Do you believe that on the whole you do the best you can with the resources available to you? What do you believe about your partner, your children, your co-workers and your friends? Take a look at these questions and your decisions from a holistic perspective: What do you do for your PHYSICAL well-being? Do you: • Keep safe? • Wear a seat belt? • Drive within the speed limit?r

Yes, I have spent my fair share of time worrying about what people think of me. What’s the fear?
