I'm Patricia Noll, televised self-esteem expert, author, speaker, consultant, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Certified Addictions Professional, Acupuncture Physician, author of the book Good With Me: A Simple Approach to Real Happiness from the Inside Out, and Founder of the Good With Me Community.

I redefine self-esteem as we have traditionally defined it in Good With Me and introduce the concept of the two esteems: Self-Dependent and Other-Dependent. I have been priviledged to interact each and every who has come to me for help, and through those special relationships, I am blessed to be someone who enjoys real happiness that can only come from within. It is an authentic happiness that anyone who is self-dependent can own and experience.

As the founder and owner of a state-licensed outpatient substance abuse program, Focus One, I treated thousands of troubled individuals from all walks of life for the past 26+ years. Many of these individuals were referred to me as the result of a drug or alcohol related offense. Others came to me voluntarily because their lives were falling apart.

It was here that I recognized that there was a common thread among them: I discovered a lack of self-esteem because life had taught them to be other-dependent.

I realized that society is unknowingly promoting other-dependent esteem instead of self-dependent esteem. I have become an expert at showing people how to make the shift from being other-dependent for their happiness to becoming self-dependent and experience real happiness from the inside out. And just like you, I've been where you're at. I've applied the exact same principles to myself that I would give to you... and they work.

Those of us who need to look good for the approval of others gauge how we’re doing by comparing ourselves to others. We compare ourselves to our friends, family members, peers, colleagues, coworkers, and to perfect strangers. And before we know it comparison to others becomes our constant companion. This comparison can manifest in one of two ways. The first kind of comparison is “looking up” and feeling beneath, not as good as, the objects of comparison. The second kind of comparison is “looking down” on others to make yourself feel better than, higher than, and above others.

Problem vs. Stuff What is the difference between a problem and stuff? Do you remember when the bumper sticker “Shit Happens” was popular? Do you remember how you reacted to that statement? Or how do you suppose you might have reacted to that statement? Would you be part of the majority who would say “OH NO! Now what do I do?” Would you immediately think you have a problem? Would you instantly get ready for trouble? Are you someone who allows a problem to ruin your day? Do you give all of your power away to a problem by getting all upset and stressed out?

Are you someone who would give all your water away to take care of someone else? What takes place when you give all your water away? What do you do when you’re in need of water to keep yourself hydrated and you don’t have any water left because you gave it all away? Since you don’t have any left for yourself you go without and so do those to whom you’ve been giving all your water. No one has any water now, do they? You become dehydrated and have no energy to fill up the water bottle so everyone goes without.r

Exactly what does “what you don’t know you don’t know” mean? To many, it might sound like a bunch of psychobabble, so let me explain the concept. First, imagine all the knowledge that exists in the universe in the shape of a large pie, divided into five slices. Four of the slices are somewhat small, and one is larger than all of the others put together. I found a wonderful illustration of this idea at www.thepieofknowledge.com/about.html

One Word Fits All for those who engage in harassing, stalking, hitting, fighting, threats, blackmail, domestic violence, rape, gang violence, drug trafficking, killing, terrorism and more…that one word is BULLY! The bully, whether in person, in cyberspace, via telephone, email and texts, and any other form of communication, torments, persecutes, oppresses, intimidates, browbeats, harasses, and frightens their prey with aggressive and tyrannical behavior.

Would you believe me if I told you that the way you think you are and the way you think others think you are is something that you have made up with the thoughts you think about yourself? That’s right. The way you see yourself is all made up by you. Because of the way you think about yourself you are either good enough or not. You are beautiful or ugly. You are intelligent or stupid. You are whatever you make yourself up to be. It is your story of you and it’s all made up in your head.

"When we don't approve of ourselves, we tend to believe someone else's opinion about us regardless whether or not it is accurate."

"Remember: when nothing changes, nothing changes. Just because we change what we wear, drive, or own doesn't mean we've made the changes on the inside that would allow us to feel good on a permanent basis."

"Make no mistake - the behaviors and activities you engage in to make yourself feel better, no matter how many consequences they create, will often give you the illusion of feeling good only becasue you feel less bad."

"Simple doesn't always mean easy, especially in the beginning when you still think it's hard."
